DID YOU KNOW that boswellia serrata, one of the active ingredients in our new natural NSAID supplement, showed significant efficacy for osteoarthritis symptom reduction?

According to a study of osteoarthritis subjects from The Journal of the American Nutrition Association, taking boswellia daily for six months improved the six-minute walk test and stair climb test. Post-trial MRI assessments of the tibiofemoral joints revealed that the cartilage volume, thickness, and joint space width were increased, and levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, matrix metalloproteinase-3, Fibulin-3, type II collagen degradation peptide in serum, and cross-linked C-terminal telopeptide of type II collagen in urine were significantly reduced.

Steve: You may have heard that in the last few months, manufacturers of some of our favorite gluten-free products have been purchased by Big Food conglomerates. Siete Foods, who make tasty gluten-free tortilla products were bought by PepsiCo for $1.2 billion. Simple Mills, who makes our favorite gluten-free almond flour and sea salt cracker, were purchased by Flower Foods (brands include Wonder Bread) for $725 million.

On the one hand, you should give yourself a pat on the back because you made these brands so popular that they became attractive enough to be purchased for these prices. On the other hand, we know what can happen to a wonderful food product when they are gobbled up by Big Food.

I will always give these brands the benefit of the doubt until the ingredients and quality change, which happens in some cases and others not. Let's hope for the latter.

Laughable New USDA Suggested Dietary Guidelines

Whereas I used to spend a fair amount of effort discussing the failures of the USDA Dietary Guidelines Committee, I will just mention one laughable omission from the new suggested guidelines. They refrained from giving ANY guidance on ultra-processed foods. Enough said. If you are so inclined to make your voice heard, there is a public comment period that lasts until early February.

Probably the only way sweeping change will occur is through litigation. Major food companies, including Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, Coca-Cola, Post Holdings, PepsiCo, General Mills, Nestle's, WK Kellogg, Mars, Kellanova, and Conagra (CAG.N, were hit with a new lawsuit in early December accusing them of designing and marketing "ultra-processed" foods to be addictive to children, causing chronic disease. The lawsuit filed by the firm Morgan & Morgan, a major U.S. plaintiffs' firm, described the case as the first of its kind.

FDA Bans FD&C Red Dye No.3 From Food, Beverages, and Drugs

This artificial color has been linked to adverse neurobehavioral outcomes in children. It has been banned by the rest of the world for years. Notably, the FDA determined as early as 1990 that Red 3, whose chemical name is erythrosine, should be banned in cosmetics because of its link to thyroid cancer in male rats. The deadline to remove it from food and beverages is January 15, 2027 and drugs by January 18, 2028.

A 30-something couple saw Steve because they were having trouble conceiving and had been through several miscarriages. Their intention was to optimize their diet and lifestyle for six months before going the fertility treatment route.

Steve noticed that both of them were reacting to one or more foods. Both were overly acidic, but the wife was exceptionally so. The key was for them to understand that diet and lifestyle change was just as important for the husband as the wife.

After giving them both specific dietary modifications, stress management reduction techniques, and targeted supplemental nutrients, the goal was to get pregnant in three months. If not, they would do stool and/or food reaction testing.

They followed the plan to the letter and in three months, they became pregnant and carried a healthy baby to term!

The Journal of Clinical Medicine suggests that disorders in the neck can lead to dizziness. The reason being is that the neck has highly developed receptors, which are integrated within the central nervous system. The receptors of the eyes and inner ears are also part of this system. 

Studies have shown that there is an interconnectedness of coordinated motion between the head, eyes, neck, and body through various reflex activities. When the neck is out of alignment, the slightest movement creates changes to the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive inputs, and then dizziness may occur. 

Chiropractors evaluate for misalignments of the neck to determine if that’s a cause for dizziness. Manual therapy to realign the neck is most widely recommended. This is what helps rebalance the nervous system and its reflexes. This is a great example of how the body is so interconnected and why being checked and adjusted for misalignments can be life changing.

Failure To Thrive

In Chicken Soup for the Chiropractic Soul there’s an account from a Chiropractic intern. Two of his patients at the clinic had brought in their six day old baby, named Tommy. 

Tommy was born with forceps and afterwards he wouldn’t nurse or take formula. He then developed reflux and rejected any tiny amounts of liquid he could swallow. He was listless, weak, restless and wasn’t sleeping. 

The parents brought Tommy that morning to the medical doctor and they diagnosed him with “failure to thrive”. There was nothing the medical doctor could do so the parents decided to see what Chiropractic could offer. 

The intern could feel that the top bone in Tommy’s neck was out of alignment. This was most likely due to the pulling from the forceps. The chiropractor gave a gentle thrust and felt the bone move away from his thumb, back into alignment. Tommy gave a sharp but brief cry and was handed back to his parents. 

Later that evening the parents reached out to report that Tommy had taken a bottle, his first meal in six days, without any signs of reflux and was finally sleeping peacefully for the first time. Tommy could now thrive after his first chiropractic adjustment.
