Dancing with Nature

May 2018 Issue 5 Vol 8
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

May ...... it has bee n simply aMAYzing here in Waynesville. And rainy. Good news is that it is rather lush here after our lingering win ter. Th e gallery has been quick paced and demanding. We brought in new pair of helping hands, Melissa Burrell, who is one of our artists and pre vious owner of Leapin' Frog Gallery in Frog Level, so she is a perfect addition to the gallery. Becky, the young one :=) and my right hand, went to Alaska for 13 days (hence the tardy newsletter .... gotta blame someone). I had the Wall Street flower garden to plant ... and there was Mother's Day, someone's 40th birthday, and hikes to make. Just stuff ... and rain. The bi-annual Block Party was canceled due to rain storm threat, just as we had the two apartments loaded with guests here for a weekend of activities. So now I have Kids on Main crafts for 200 that involves 2 LARGE bags of Hershey's kisses that need a home .... and not mine. We have entered into the gallery's point o f sale system tons of new artwork for your viewing as we prepare for "the season". Things are heating up for a fun summer of activities downtown so stay tuned.

Just in time for summer season there have been a couple of changes downtown. Our neighbor shop, Cheddar Box, is calling it quits. Owning three shops in three different towns came to be quite taxing. We are sorry to see them go. Moving in will be Pleasant Places (the "bird shop") from down the street and an antique shop will move in their place. A couple of months old is Moonlight and Garbo, a unique clothing store for women located next to Tia Dana (previously ReMax). Get ready to "get sauced" at what was once Tipping Point. Sauced has just opened and is now serving pizza, tacos and taps.

Downtown Waynesville is aMAYzing all year long. It may be a revolving door of changing but it is all good and we look forward to your experiencing our continued awesomeness.

May you walk in beauty ~

Art After Dark
Crystal Allen

Pottery artist Crystal Allen will be demonstrating at Twigs and Leaves Gallery during Art After Dark Friday, June 1st, 6-9PM. As a longtime resident of Haywood County, Crystal draws on her surroundings for inspiration.

Friday evening, as you stroll through the gallery's 140+ primarily regional artists, enjoy music by "Two Armadillos" (Herb and Leslie Isley) and delight in the savory hors d'eurves.

Spotlight
 Suzanne Barrett Justis
Painter
Suzanne Barrett Justis grew up in an artistic environment in upstate New York. Having a professional artist as a mother definitely influenced Suzanne by exposing her to lots of mediums and opportunities to create art at a very early age. Being primarily an animal artist, Suzanne has also been influenced and inspired by artists such as wildlife artists Robert Bateman and John Kuhn as well as portrait artist John Singer Sargent.

Having a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science has served Suzanne well in her ability to capture the essence and nuance of all the animal subjects she paints. Her understanding of the animal's habitats and mannerisms is quite evident in her works. Suzanne continues to learn all she can about the animal world she paints by touring the zoos and animal parks throughout the country.

Suzanne Barrett Justis lives with her family in Kingsport, Tennessee where she has her own art gallery and studio downtown. She can be found most days in her studio where she paints and teaches. Suzanne has several select students she works with, some of whom have gone on to paint professionally as well. Suzanne is also a lead animal artist for the Kingsport Carousel Project. In this role, Suzanne has taught all the volunteers how to paint the hand carved carousel anim als that are featured on this carousel.
