Philip Moore commissioned by King's
|
Daniel Hyde and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, have commissioned Philip Moore to compose a new carol for A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve this year.
His lively, spirited carol, The Angel Gabriel, is composed for mixed voices and organ, setting
words by S. Baring-Gould (1834-1924). It has been dedicated to the memory of Sir Stephen Cleobury (1948-2019), following the deeply sad news of his death last month, so soon after his retirement as Director of Music at King's for 37 years.
Philip Moore is a former Organist and Master of the Music at York Minister. Talking about his new choral work, he said, "the gentle and familiar lilt of the Basque melody to which these words have been sung is known and loved all over the world. Without in any way denigrating the music, I have often felt that a more vigorous treatment of these words would also be appropriate. 'His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame,' for example, gives more than a hint of the drama of the Annunciation. My setting of the words attempts to illustrate this. The organ introduction reflects the descent of the Angel Gabriel, as well as my childish love of the thought of Heaven being above us."
The Angel Gabriel, which also quotes from Stanford's Magnificat in G, will be published on Christmas Eve, after its first performance at
King's College.

Christmas Eve at King's
100 Years of Nine Lessons & Carols
Written and compiled by Timothy Rogers
|
For this fascinating book, the author has delved into the archives in Cambridge to produce a complete record of the music that has been used in the world-famous Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King's over the last 100 years. The book mentions a scheme, devised by Boris Ord, for performing the hymn, Once in royal David's city. There are comments made by Sir David Willcocks, giving his ideas for refining the service. The author remembers the composers that Sir Philip Ledger introduced into the Festivals, as well as highlighting popular carols from Sir Stephen Cleobury's era.
