It's Giving Tuesday - The Giving Season
For the next several weeks Arts Blast will be awash in holiday doings but don't think that what you see here is all there is. Check and then check again On the Calendar and What a Week Ahead! online for updates. If you think something's missing, let me know, and if you have something to add to the calendar, PLEASE use the format at the end of any Arts Blast to send it to [email protected]. I'll do my best to let you know everything there is to do.

🌲 As I'm getting this Arts Blast ready to send out, calendar listings are still landing in my inbox. Setting aside policy for the season, I'll continue updating the calendar at willimiller.com every day, so send away and remember to keep checking!

If you've had your computer booted up in the past few days, your inbox is overflowing with reminders about Giving Tuesday. This is the day all kinds of organizations are hoping your generous nature will help them carry on their work. Not to worry if your wallet's a bit thin; there are other ways to give, including stepping up as volunteer. Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Fort Pierce, for example, needs 30-35 volunteers for each night of Garden of Lights.

There's a website that explains what it's all about. "GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give."

A note on what you're seeing in Calendar listings:
I'm attempting to list holiday events as they come in and to try to keep readers on holiday track, I'm calling on the Mac emoji keyboard. When you see one of these — 🔔🌲❄️ — in front of an entry, you'll know it appears to have a holiday connection.
Always tweaking our format, Arts Blast now has On the Calendar and What a Week Ahead! online, updated often. Auditions and Calls For Artists are now sharing a page.

Holiday Nights at McKee
"It was truly our pleasure lighting up McKee Botanical Gardens. It is such a serene and peaceful garden and they allowed us to be creative with our display. A very fun project and we look forward to adding new designs for years to come." That was Sean Wolfe, owner of Holiday Lightscapes, who provided the wonderland that will be Holiday Nights of Lights at McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach this month.
From McKee:

McKee Botanical Garden has doubled the number of nights it will feature its Holiday Nights of Lights this year! The festivities will begin on Tuesday, December 10th, with a special McKee Member’s Only Event from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Beginning on Wednesday, December 11th through Sunday, December 22 nd  and Friday, December 27th through Sunday, December 29th, the event is open to the public nightly from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Enjoy the magic and joy of the holiday season with family and friends at McKee Botanical Garden during Holiday Nights of Lights with extended nights this year! The Garden will be adorned with thousands of professionally-installed holiday LED lighting displays as guests are welcomed by a tunnel of lights with animation in the Garden pergola plus large vibrant spheres and an assortment of colorful trees in the main greeting area. Additional special effects throughout the Garden's paths include illuminated hanging meteors, starbursts, snowflakes, dripping icicle luminaries, holiday-themed lanterns, spiral wrapped trees and up-lighting.

Lindsey Reymore's Back in Town
Stop me if you’ve heard this introduction — and you probably have if you’ve been reading Arts Blast for a while. I first crossed paths with the young lady in this feature when she was a student performer in Young Musicians Spotlight on WQCS quite a few years ago.

Lindsey Reymore was a student in the class of 2008 at South Fork High School in Martin County when she brought her oboe to the radio studio and absolutely knocked the socks off all of us on the show’s production team.

Now 30, Reymore, currently in her final year of PhD work in Music Theory and Cognition at Ohio State University, has returned to her old stomping grounds to conduct a workshop for the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony. “TCYS was such a special part of my experience growing up and was a big influence in choosing my career in music,” she said.
In her school days on the Treasure Coast she played with TCYS, Indian River Pops! Orchestra, New Gardens Band, South Fork HS Symphonic and Marching band, and St. Joseph's bands throughout elementary and middle school. Reymore lists Martha Alfee, William Lindner, Paul Marcucci, and Tom Servinsky as instrumental in her development.

From South Fork, Reymore went on to study oboe performance at Vanderbilt University and University of Texas at Austin before going on to Ohio State University to study the psychology of music. And she has no doubt about where she wants her career path to lead. “As this is the last year of my PhD, I am in the process of applying for jobs as a professor of music. The goal is to be a professor, teach, and to keep doing research!”
Reymore’s back in town with a purpose, a workshop with the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony for local musicians and music lovers. “My goal is for participants to walk away with solid foundations for understanding the basic elements of music and how they work together to create our musical experience. Understanding how music is put together is helpful for musicians, who can use this information to shape expression in their performance, but it is also helpful for listeners without musical training who can use their understanding to enrich their listening experience and find deeper meaning in music.” She added, “The workshop is accessible for all, reading music is not required!” For information and to register, click here .

This is Reymore’s second TCYS workshop and there’s a good chance it won’t be her last. “I'm so happy to see so many young people engaged with and dedicated to music, knowing that regardless of the career they choose, music can stay an important and supportive part of their lives as they are making their way in the world.”

Keep up with Lindsey online and on Facebook , and follow her research on Twitter, @lindseyreymore.

Give a Chimp a Bear

The LoveDocs will be broadcasting their radio show live from Waldo's in Vero Beach Friday, Dec. 6 from 2-7 p.m. , collecting new Teddy bears, blankets, and bananas to donate to Save the Chimps, the world’s largest chimp sanctuary, located in Ft. Pierce, Florida. More than 250 retired chimpanzees now live in large family groups on 12 separate three-acre islands, where they receive three fresh meals daily, first-rate medical care, and a variety of activities in an enriched environment.
“The chimps, much like children, love to snuggle bears and blankies. And eat bananas. Anyone who brings in a new item will be entered to win some cool prizes,” Waldo's manager Lee Olsen said.
Irving Burgie, a singer and songwriter who penned lyrics for the classic tune, "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)," which was made famous by  Harry Belafonte , has died, his son said. He was 95.
