Singing, Blessing, and Sending Together
A message from Mtr. Jean Long, Associate Rector
| |
May has a way of gathering many moments at once: celebrations, endings, beginnings, blessings, and the first hints of summer. The school year is winding down. Graduation announcements are arriving in the mail. Summer plans are taking shape.
At St. Andrew’s, May is full of these moments too. Tomorrow afternoon, May 3 at 5 p.m., our parish choir will offer an evening of Broadway, Hollywood, and more at The Cabaret. With music from Spamalot, Oklahoma!, Wicked, The Prince of Egypt, and more, it will be a joyful reminder that music has a way of bringing us together. It lifts our spirits and gives us a chance to enjoy the gifts of the St. Andrew’s community.
The following Sunday, May 10, is Mother’s Day, and we will also honor our high school seniors at the 10:15 a.m. service. We will bless them, celebrate them, and send them with our prayers as they prepare for what comes next. These moments matter. They remind our seniors that St. Andrew’s is grateful for them, and they remind all of us that the prayers, formation, and relationships we share here continue in the lives of those we bless and send.
Then, on May 17, Bishop Amy Dafler-Meaux will be with us for confirmations, receptions, and reaffirmations. Members of our community will stand before the congregation and claim their faith, some for the first time, some again in a new season of life. These are not only personal milestones. They are moments when the whole congregation remembers the promises of baptism and renews our commitment to walk with one another in faith.
On May 24, we will celebrate Pentecost, the day we remember the Holy Spirit coming to the first disciples, giving them courage and sending them into the world. Pentecost reminds us that the Spirit still meets us in community, gives us courage, and sends us to live as Christ’s people in the world.
In other words, May is a month of singing, blessing, claiming, sending, and being carried by the Spirit.
That feels especially fitting as we prepare to hear tomorrow’s reading from Acts. Stephen’s story is not an easy one, but in the midst of hostility and fear, Scripture tells us that he is filled with the Holy Spirit and sees the glory of God. He is not alone. He is held.
And perhaps that is the reminder beneath all these May gatherings. We come together not just to fill a calendar, but to remember what is true: joy is stronger when it is shared, faith is renewed when we witness it in one another, and courage often comes through the prayers and presence of other people.
So, I hope you will join us in the weeks ahead. Come sing, bless, pray, witness, celebrate, and be part of what God is carrying forward among us.

Adult Spiritual Growth
"We have a policy of not limiting the theological reflection of St. Andrew's members. Groups don't have to get their materials approved by a central authority; in fact, we actively encourage members to start discussion groups that come from different perspectives. That's the Episcopal way." - Fr. John Spicer, Rector
