Old Forester Barrel-Proof
Coming on super strong in the store-pick single-barrel category, Old Forester Barrel Proof has become almost as popular and difficult to obtain as Weller picks. In the Old Forester rackhouse they use a method called “heat-cycling”, where, in the wintertime, instead of just leaving the barrels alone like most companies, they only let the temp drop to 50 degrees and then heat it up to 90, and then let it fall again, over and over. This method produces more rich oaky flavors in a shorter period of time. That makes these barrels mega-delicious, and highly coveted. The last time we had one of these bottlings, we sold out in just about 3 hours. I imagine this one will go even faster, so don’t blink!
This one has a nose of honey, vanilla, and pie crust. On the palate, the pie notes continue, but there is a distinct sweet cracked corn note that transcends above the other flavors. Mellow caramel with well-defined spice, too, but more than anything, that fantastic dark corn note. Tasty!
Old Elk Wheated Bourbon
You know you’re going to have to have this. I mean, I’m going to write about it here, for sure… but I probably don’t need to. Most of you know the quality of the Old Elk wheater picks, including our beloved “Honey Bunches Of Oak”, and that amazing 113 proof “no-nickname” barrel that tasted like bourbon heaven. This one’s called “Honey Bunches Of Oak & Peaches”, and who doesn’t want that? Don’t drag your feet on this one, either, because it will be gone before you know it.
This barrel is a 5 year, tasted at 116.4 proof. The nose is big, with fresh yellow peaches that intensifies as it opens up. Creamy vanilla lies just underneath, with just the softest spice for balance. But, overall, again… those peaches! The big fruit notes continue on the palate, with the vanilla turning to creamy caramel, and very nice baking spices. The oak is bright and tight and very pleasing. What a great barrel!
