FIRST FILED: MAUI WILDFIRES | |
On Monday, August 14, we filed the first lawsuit on behalf of an individual against Hawaiian Electric Industries, Hawai’i Electric Light Company, and Maui Electric Company, alleging the utilities’ powerlines started the blaze.
The Fire Litigation lawyers and staff, Marketing, Intake, HR, and Operations teams have been hyper-focused on how we can assist those impacted by the Maui wildfires. The firm volunteer committee is also evaluating relief options to help those in need.
Shout out to our New Associate Julia Bryant, Paul Starita, and Jonna for all their hard work over the weekend!

ATTORNEY TEAM: Brett Schreiber and Domenic Martini
CONFIDENTIAL
CASE: Case against the City for allowing people to park on a dangerous, but unsuspicious, stretch of road. Our clients were the 14th and 15th victims of the City's poor decision to allow people to park on the shoulder of that roadway.
As our clients crossed the street, they were struck by a car they couldn't see coming. One client died at the scene, while our client suffered a severe spine injury.
After 6 long weeks of trial, the jury hung 8-4 in our favor. We were one vote shy of winning.
We immediately sent settlement demands to the City with warnings about what would happen at re-trial when we got the 9th vote.
RESULT: $4.8M settlement for the client

ATTORNEY TEAM: Matt Clendenin
CASE: One afternoon, 5 teenage boys went off-roading in a SUV after school. The 16-year-old driver rolled the SUV causing life-threatening injuries to multiple parties. Paramedics life-flighted our client who suffered a TBI and multiple fractures.
Within 7 days after the incident, our pre-litigation team investigated the crash, all possible insurance coverages, and potential Defendants.
Matt interviewed a local dirt bike instructor who scouted and documented the roadway conditions, while our pre-litigation team also confirmed underlying auto and umbrella policies.
Matt flew to Stanford Hospital and stayed with the victim and his family in order to help them understand the legal process. He skillfully coordinated with multiple law firms representing the other victims to maximize our own client's recovery - while maintaining the personal friendships between the families involved in the incident.
RESULT: Within 60 days of the event, Matt was able to secure a global policy-limit tender of $1.5M on behalf of all the victims.
