Mississippi INBRE is saddened to share the passing of Michael R. Garrett, PhD, who served as director of the Instrumentation and Services Core for several years, in addition to other roles within the program. He made meaningful contributions to Mississippi INBRE, supporting students, faculty and research across the state. Dr. Garrett’s work will have a lasting impact on the Mississippi INBRE community.

Delta State University gains access to billion-dollar DOE research facility
January 21
The first DSU project under the new agreement, funded by Mississippi INBRE, will be led by Dr. Christopher Jurgenson, who will use EMSL’s cryo-EM facility to determine the structure of a plant enzyme involved in producing the medicinal compound berberine.

Jackson State to use $14.5 million contract on heart disease research

Jackson State University will use $14.5 million in funding to investigate cardiovascular disease and related health risks in Black Mississippians.
The money resulted from a 10-year contract the university inked with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities to extend its Jackson Heart Study Graduate Training and Education Center.
