Now Hiring: Director of USM Biomedical Research Network
The University of Southern Mississippi is currently accepting applications for the position of Director of Biomedical Research Network
The Director of the Biomedical Research Network (BRN) will provide energetic, collaborative, and visionary leadership, administrative guidance, and advocacy for the mission of the BRN in the areas of research, mentoring, and community engagement.
The BRN collaborates at multiple levels, across The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) campuses, state, community, and other academic, government, and not-for-profit organizations to promote and expand biomedical research through innovation and develop a skilled workforce.
The Director will also lead the Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (Mississippi INBRE), which is supported by funds from the National Institutes of Health and the Office of the Vice President for Research to build biomedical research capacity throughout the state network, supporting Primarily Undergraduate Institutions/Emerging Research Institutions (PUI/ERI) faculty research, mentoring, student research participation, and infrastructure.

Southern Miss Launches Graduate Training and Education Center to Advance Cardiovascular Health Research

Congressman Bennie Thompson Announces Tougaloo College Awarded Over $2.2 Million From National Science Foundation

Congressman Bennie G. Thompson is pleased to announce that the NSF has awarded Tougaloo College a grant totaling $2,245,846.00 for the project titled “Implementation Project: Strengthening the STEM Pathway through a Holistic Multi-layer Approach.” The award, under the direction of Dr. Manliang Feng, will begin on August 1, 2025.

Mississippi INBRE, EPSCoR Co-Host Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference 2025
August 19, 2025
Mississippi INBRE, in partnership with the Mississippi Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), co-hosted the fourth annual Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference (MIEC25) on July 24 at the Ole Miss Student Union. The event drew more than 350 attendees and featured over 190 oral and poster presentations.

MS-INBRE-Supported Publication: Heme-mediated selection of encapsulated Streptococcus pneumoniae in the lungs by oxidative stress

Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) causes cytotoxicity and encapsulates within the lung parenchyma, leading to pneumococcal pneumonia. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and likely involve multiple bacterial and host factors.
