Matt's Message

You may have heard the definition of “philanthropy” comes from its Greek origin which is a combination of two words - “philos” which means “brotherly love”, and “anthropy” which means “mankind” or “humanity.” It is the act of showing the love of a dear friend towards others. It describes very well what our associates do each day – acting in such a way as to show our sincere compassion for those we serve. Philanthropy is more than a good idea. It’s the culture we’ve created within Siskin Hospital to serve patients, their family members, visitors and one another. It was noticed recently during our survey with the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ). The survey team commented that we have an outstanding culture here, at Siskin Hospital. They stated that everyone had a smile on their face, was friendly and courteous, and patients they interviewed were thrilled with the care they were receiving. Another way we show compassion is through our charity towards individuals who have suffered a traumatic injury or illness and do not have the means to pay for this region’s finest physical rehabilitation. Each year, we provide nearly $600,000 in scholarships for these individuals. But we don’t do this alone. Many of you partner with us in monthly gifts towards scholarships, or your generous sponsorships and donations during our spring Possibilities Luncheon or fall Golf Classic. For this, we thank you! As we come into the end of the year, often called the giving season, will you remember those who need your philanthropy – your charity – and consider a gift to our scholarship fund? For your convenience, online giving is available at link below. In advance, we thank you.

JOIN US FOR A GROUNDBREAKING DAY

Please plan to join us on Tuesday, October 31st at 1:00 P.M., on the campus of Siskin Hospital for a groundbreaking of Grady’s Garden, the largest of our five planned Healing Gardens at Siskin Hospital. As you know, this garden is named for our friend, Grady Williams, who valued our vision to build therapeutic gardens to improve patient outcomes and provide a respite for visitors and our associates.

Charles' Story

Struck by Lightning

It was a typical May afternoon at the Willcutt's home. Charles was working to expand the garden when they felt a few raindrops and heard a single clap of thunder. He instructed his wife, Cynthia, who was working in garden boxes closer to home, to move to the carport. In a matter of seconds, she witnessed her husband being struck by lightning. A bolt of lightning struck a tree and arched 12 feet to Charles. He was thrown backwards down the embankment into a patch of poison ivy, leaving his face ashen, and rendering him motionless for several minutes.
