Scholarship Awards Reception Video

CONGRATULATIONS to each of our 2023 scholarship recipients!

Sisters of Nia awarded 40 young women $26,500 in scholarship funds!!! Thank you to everyone who donated to our scholarship fund…your donations helped make this possible. We are very excited to present our 2023 recipients, each of whom is very deserving.

We are very proud of their accomplishments in life so far and look forward to staying connected to see what their future holds. We are greatly appreciative for our event sponsors, SMUD and the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, for their sponsorship. Their generous donations definitely helped to make our Scholarship Awards Reception a successful event.

2023 SISTERS OF NIA ATL TRIP

As part of their culminating rites of passage, this past June, our 8th grade Nia girls attended a Historical Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU)/Black History Tour: we toured Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University visited the APEX Museum (an African History museum), the National Center for Civil & Human Rights (a hands-on museum), and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, birth home, and burial site.

The purpose of this trip is to bring the African history lessons from our monthly sessions full circle and to reinforce each of the Sisters of Nia principles. During the trip, the girls are able to make visual connections from what they’ve learned in our sessions. This is a very impactful and memorable experience for our girls…and lifelong bonds are cemented after attending. Thank you to all our donors for supporting this trip…we appreciate you!

We are now accepting donations for our

2024 Atlanta trip!

In July, we celebrated our eight 8th grade girls at our 8th Annual Rites of Passage Celebration. This event symbolizes their elevation to new levels of maturity, as purposeful, confident, and motivated young women. In order to participate in the ceremony, each girl must complete a series of eight tasks, each representing one of the Nia principles. Tasks include research, presentations, and interviews enabling the girls to learn about and connect with a variety of African Americans in their families, communities, and career interests. Our alumnae leave our program armored with a set of tools to be well prepared for their future.

Camp Nia 2023 was a wonderful success! We had 36 young ladies complete the camp; they learned old school dances and songs, created awesome stage designs and embodied their old school characters. Thank you to all who came out to support our performance! Special Thank You  to our Camp Nia sponsors:

City of Sacramento

Before starting the new Nia year, the 7th and 8th grade Nia girls attend an annual retreat together focused on strengthening their self-esteem, sisterhood, and problem-solving skills. This year, we chose Quarry Park Adventures in Rocklin for our retreat location...the girls participated in games to strengthen community, communication, and sisterhood; they participated in zip-lining and high ropes courses and challenges, rock climbing, free-falling and many other adventures; and they ended their day with a relaxing paddle boat ride. We had an awesome time!

The purpose of the retreat is for the girls to leave with a stronger bond with one another and stronger self-esteem, having accomplished tasks together they never viewed as possible. They came back from the retreat stronger and ready to start the new Nia year with a bang!

Shout out to the Women Lawyers of Sacramento (WLS) for their generous $1,500 donation toward our retreat! Their donation allowed us to purchase a bus for transportation at no cost to the girls so that we could all travel to and from the retreat together, which definitely added fun and excitement to the retreat. THANK YOU WLS!
