Tour Overview

During the tour, we’ll get an up-close look at the journey of Tyndall Stone from the quarry to the finished architectural product. Attendees will see how massive blocks of stone are extracted from the quarry using diamond-tipped saws, drilling and wedging techniques, and heavy equipment before being transported to the processing plant. Inside the facility, we’ll explore how these blocks are cut, shaped, ground, split, and finished to precise architectural specifications using everything from large diamond saws and grinders to planers, lathes, hydraulic splitters, and overhead cranes.

Along the way, we’ll learn about the unique geology and fossil-rich character that gives Tyndall Stone its distinctive mottled appearance, as well as the history of Gillis Quarries, a fourth-generation Manitoba company that has been working with the stone since 1910. It’s a unique opportunity to see firsthand how a locally quarried natural material travels from the ground to become part of some of Canada’s most recognizable buildings and architectural landmarks.
