SAFETY SPOTLIGHT

The American Trucking Association’s National Truck Driving Championship (NTDC) is next week, August 21-24 in Indianapolis, Indiana. https://ntdc.trucking.org/

This competition has a long history dating back to 1937 when it was known as the National Truck Rodeo. The NTDC competitors are made up of the winners in nine classes of competition from 50 State Trucking Associations’ Truck Driving Championships (TDC). During the TDC and NTDC competition, each driver will demonstrate their inspection and driving skills, knowledge, and professionalism through a series of tests. The drivers undergo a written examination, pre-trip inspection and finally, the most visible display of ability – the skills test, where they drive the course. These annual competitions inspire thousands of drivers to operate accident-free and win locally for a chance to go.

When asked, professional drivers tell you they are drawn to the Championships by the spirit of competition and the prestige of being named the best of the best. It has been described as like the Olympics, where they come to win, but revel in camaraderie and excitement.

Representing Tennessee in the 2024 National Truck Driving Championship Competition are:

Straight Truck – Steven Magers, FedEx Freight

5 Axle – Tim Blair, FedEx Freight

4 Axle – Hobie Eirich, FedEx Freight

3 Axle – Gary Luster, FedEx Freight

Sleeper Birth – Dean Hiles, Walmart Transportation

Twin Trailers – Ronny Hamill, FedEx Freight

Flatbed – Ray Shelton, FedEx Freight

Tank Truck – Lonnie Cole, Walmart Transportation

Step Van – Jason Flowers, FedEx Ground

Congratulations to our Tennessee drivers and their companies for attending this year’s competition.

The Association wishes you the best!!
