For the past few years, Councilman Al Austin, Councilman Rex Richardson and I have rotated the privilege of hosting the Black History Month Celebration at City Hall. This year, Councilman Austin's office did a phenomenal job of bringing out the Black Employees Association comprised of different City employees who work together to serve residents in various ways. Past, present, and future generations celebrated over live music, food, and cultural organizations! I was proud to host my dear friend, Sixth District resident, and first Black Accountant for the City of Long Beach (now retired), Ted Caruthers!

Each month, Miss Alice Robinson hosts her community feeding on the first Wednesday of the month at 12:00pm. This month, the theme was Black History and emphasized Long Beach History. Friends of Alice Robinson had an amazing display that honored many historical moments. From the election or President Obama, stories of Police Offier Daryle Black, to the lane dedication for Autrillia Scott here in the Sixth District, there were beautiful memoirs for display at King Park. Thank you Miss Alice and friends!

Griff's Academy hosted their 20 Years of Service and Decades of Black History Program on Friday, February 8, 2019 at St. Mark Baptist Church in the Sixth District. Griff's Academy began as a daycare provider in September of 1999 and focused on providing care for infants and children 6 weeks to 12 years of age. In 2015, Griff's became a home-based school serving children ages 4 to 6 years of age. Their curriculum provides transitional kindergarten through kindergarten education. Congratulations and thank you for your commitment to nurturing our youth!

African American Cultural Center UPDATE
Over the next three months, residents can participate in the community engagement process through community roundtables, focus groups, internet surveys, and more. This outreach will be led by Tasha W. Hunter of the Arts Council for Long Beach and Alan Burks of Environ Architecture, Inc. During that time, Lord Cultural Resources, a premier national organization experienced in creating cultural centers and museums, will work with a Community Advisory Committee to explore best practices. I am incredibly disappointed in the silence my office is receiving from the applicants of the Anaheim and Atlantic project. I will continue to fight for their forthcoming engagement with the community. We all want to know what is coming and how our business owners, residents, and visitors will be affected. There are people that rely on the Anaheim and Atlantic plaza for their daily needs and jobs.Thank you to the Anaheim and Atlantic Work Group for reaching out to my office and working in a partnership so we can sit down and discuss the information we have and an overview of next steps. Join Friends of MacArthur Park, City Fabrick, Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine and my office for the first workshop of the MacArthur Park Master Plan! We want to hear from every stakeholder on the vision for this park. As your Councilmember, I want this park to meet every single need of the residents. Weekend Detours at Gerald Desmond Bridge Project
Feb. 22-24 closure affects westbound Ocean Blvd., southbound Harbor Scenic Drive
A weekend temporary road closure beginning Friday night, Feb. 22, will prompt detours for motorists heading west on Ocean Boulevard as they leave downtown Long Beach, as well as southbound travel along Harbor Scenic Drive heading toward the Queen Mary.
The closures and detours begin at 10 p.m. Friday and are expected to end by 10 p.m. Sunday. The closures are required to enable crews to demolish the final two columns of the former northbound I-710 connector ramp to the existing Gerald Desmond Bridge.
Motorists traveling these routes during the upcoming weekend should allow extra time.
Here are the detours during the weekend closure of Feb. 22-24:
- If traveling west on Ocean Boulevard from downtown Long Beach and toward the bridge, motorists will be diverted north at Golden Shore toward the 710 freeway. Take I-710 north a short distance to exit at westbound Anaheim Street, then take the I-710 south route to exit at Pico Avenue. Take Pico Avenue south to the westbound on-ramp to the bridge. Alternatively, if San Pedro or the I-110 freeway are your destination, westbound motorists can take Anaheim Street all the way.
- The primary detour to the Queen Mary from the southbound I-710 is to take the “Terminal Is/Pico Avenue” exit to Pico Avenue, then stay in the right lane to head south on Pico. After passing the bridge construction project, turn left onto South Harbor Scenic Drive and follow the signs to the Queen Mary.
- The alternate detour to the Queen Mary is while traveling south on I-710, take the “Downtown Long Beach, Convention Center, Aquarium” exit then to Shoreline Drive, and continue to the Queen Mary on-ramp (Queens Way). Make a right turn onto Queens Way and follow the signs to the Queen Mary.

Whittier Elementary is Participating in the Grades of Green Waste Campaign
Congratulations to Whittier Elementary School!
Whittier
is participating in
Grades of Green’s
Waste Campaign. These young environmental leaders are creating school and city-wide solutions, while also competing for sustainability grant funding with student teams from 77 cities across the globe.
The Waste Campaign is a semester-long program that empowers teams of middle and high school student leaders to reduce waste and create solutions to local waste issues. Grades of Green provides student teams with a library of resources valued at $1,500 per student team at no cost to the teams, including a virtual classroom of NGSS aligned environmental curriculum, webinars with waste management experts, and hands-on student leadership activities.
The program culminates in April 2019, when the winning teams will be announced. Each team of participating students is paired with a Grades of Green Mentor to guide them as they research local waste issues, identify a solution, and share their 3-minute video pitch with leaders in their area to create ripples of change. Each student team has the chance to win sustainability grant funding worth up to $1000.

Little Free Libraries are Looking for Homes
The next round of little free libraries is about to begin. Anthony Formoso, a community member who was awarded the grant for these libraries is looking for properties in which these libraries can be installed. You must be the property owner or have permission from the owner to apply for a little free library. The Leadership Academy Mentoring Program (LAMP) is Here!
The Leadership Academy Mentoring Program (LAMP) offers leadership skill development in combination with vocational arts education for young people aged 14–24 living in low-income households.
The program aims to inspire and empower participants as they create personal and career growth plans to enable self-sustainability, overcome personal barriers and contribute positively to their families and communities.
LAMP builds leadership skills in combination with four creative disciplines:
• Film/TV production
• Graphic design/silk screening
• Music production
• Photography

Community Can Sign Up for Port-Related Jobs at Long Beach City College
The Port of Long Beach Maritime Center of Excellence at Long Beach City College (LBCC) is now accepting registrations from community members who are interested in the global logistics and supply chain industries. LBCC’s Workforce Development will be offering these short-term fee-based educational classes.
Beginning in February at LBCC’s Pacific Coast Campus, the training series will target occupations in the global logistics and supply chain industries that require more education than a high school diploma, but less than a college degree. These industries are expected to have continued growth and demand for trained workers in Southern California with the average annual wage of $63,130, approximately 14 percent higher than all other industries in Southern California.
Training will prepare people for positions in:
- Supply Chain Customer Service
- Foundational Logistics
- Dispatching for Logistics
- Intermediary Logistics
- Supervisory Transportation Operations
- International Transportation & U.S. Customs
- Supervisory Goods Management
To accommodate work schedules, training will take place in the evenings and on Saturdays. Costs will vary between $495 and $795 per class, but scholarships will also be available.
