A Message from our Pastor and Teacher
|
Sunday, May 16 ~ '“Holy Curiosity”
Last Sunday, Pastor Jill spoke about the importance of listening to one another with undivided attention, without judgment, and with a tender heart. This is much easier to do when we are listening to someone with whom we agree, enjoy and appreciate. How do we listen to our opponent, however? How do we listen with an open heart to the one who believes very differently than we do – politically, religiously, culturally, etc.? How can we develop a “holy curiosity” for those who understand our world differently?

Dear Members and Friends,
It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the date for resuming in-person, in- Sanctuary worship: May 23rd. After 440 days, we are finally returning to our Sanctuary! May 23rd is Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the Church, and a fitting day to return to our Sanctuary. We will celebrate this day with Music Sunday; it will truly be a day of praise and elation! In preparation for May 23rd, please note the following:
1). Please wear your mask at all times and maintain physical distance. Hand sanitizer is available in the Narthex. While many have been vaccinated, some have been unable to achieve that yet. As an extra precaution, we changed our filtration system (from MERV 4 to MERV 8) and installed UVC lights on each unit. UVC light has been shown to quickly inactivate the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Your safety is of the utmost importance to us.
2). We will initially limit seating capacity in the Sanctuary to sixty persons with an additional ten persons in the Narthex. There will be an overflow section in Covenant Hall where the service will be livestreamed. Doors will be propped open to create a cross breeze.
3). Families with children: At this time, children who are three years and younger will stay in worship with their families. Children who are four years and older will leave after the Children's Circle with Ms. Susi for outdoor Sunday School. A virtual Sunday School class will be held at 9:30 am with Ms. Susi for those unable to attend in-person worship.
4). Due to restrictions, there will be no coffee or goodies. You may socialize outdoors.
5). We will continue to livestream the service for those who are unable to attend or prefer to worship at home.
This is a momentous occasion of great celebration. Thank you for journeying with us. We miss you. We love you. We look forward to gathering together in-person!
In Great Love,
Mary Fung Jill Kirchner-Rose
President Pastor

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team
|
“Can we please stop associating darkness with evil... Close your eyes/dream state/meditation = darkness. Night sky/universe at all times = darkness. Plant a seed in the ground to sprout = planted in darkness. The new life that a mother carries = the Child is formed in the darkness. Darkness is the breeding ground for creation. What are you afraid of and who taught you to fear it?”
— The People of the Sun Tribute to the Ancestors of the Middle Passage.

Book Group Plans for June 6
|
The RUCC Book Group is currently reading Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain, and will meet to discuss this book on June 6, 2021 at noon on Zoom. The presenter will be Toni Momberger. Zoom information can be found elsewhere in the View.
“Set in rural Grace County, North Carolina in a time of state-mandated sterilizations and racial tension, Necessary Lies tells the story of … two young women, seemingly worlds apart, but both haunted by tragedy. Jane and Ivy are thrown together and must ask themselves: how can you know what you believe is right, when everyone is telling you it's wrong?” (Amazon review)
