THE DMS

MULTIMEDIA COLUMN

This month's review: We asked DMS Foundation Board member, Michael Keller, MD, to share a cultural and literary influence on his life:

About 25 years ago, somewhat randomly I picked up a copy of The New Yorker magazine at a newsstand. I've never lived in New York nor have I had any particular affinity for the city so I can't really remember why I reached for this magazine. I suspect that I was compelled by the cover art. However, it was a decision for which I am eternally grateful as I chose to subscribe almost instantly.

The New Yorker recently celebrated its centenary with a variety of special issues and articles. Published roughly on a weekly basis in both print and online forms, the New Yorker is famous for its in-depth and balanced journalism and for its broad array of subject matter. Interspersed with brilliant cultural commentary, there is fiction, poetry and all manner of media reviews. And, of course, there are the cartoons.

The New Yorker, January 13, 2013

There is literally a liberal arts education in every issue of the New Yorker magazine. I can read an article on politics then jump to an article on history, a movie or podcast review and then another article on science, art or popular culture. The writing is brilliant and its one of the reasons this magazine has survived for so long especially when many periodicals have failed.

Physicians will find the New Yorker to be a great escape from their day-to-day tasks but the broad based knowledge I have gained has helped me connect with patients who have widely varied interests. I've become more well rounded and knowledgeable and this has helped me relate more effectively with my patients.

Sometimes I lament the pile of books and films that await my attention because of my love for this magazine but I really have no regrets. Not only am I smarter because of the New Yorker magazine but the brilliant writing, analysis and commentary helps me think more clearly. I hope that you will give it a try."

Speaking of Physicians Who Read Magazines..

Three Questions for Past DMS President & Current DMS Foundation Board Member, Michael Keller, MD:

  • If you hadn’t become a physician, what would you be doing? I'd be a Dead Head selling grilled cheese sandwiches and dollar beers on Shakedown Street.
  • What magical fix to the house of medicine would make the most difference? The health insurance industry is amoral and it has ruined healthcare in America. A single-payer system makes sense, especially if you start with the principle that EVERYONE deserves quality healthcare, especially good primary care.
  • What destination is next on your bucket list? I'd love to hike through Bavaria, Northern Italy, and the Swiss Alps.

Michael B. Keller, MD, grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and received a Bachelor of Arts at The American University in Washington, D.C. He received his Medical Degree at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN and went on to do a Family Medicine Residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver.

Dr. Keller is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is the past-president of the Denver Medical Society. He now enjoys serving on the Board of the Denver Medical Society Foundation.

Dr Keller is married to his beautiful wife Rachel. Together, they have three adult children and two grandchildren. He enjoys live music, skiing, hiking, and travel.

DEA Warns Healthcare Workers of Impersonation Scam Targeting Doctors and Pharmacists

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is issuing a critical alert to healthcare professionals, warning of recent scam calls targeting doctors and pharmacists. Fraudsters are impersonating DEA agents to steal sensitive information and possibly extort money.
