Skier Safety Is Also About Your Gear

If you’ve been keeping up with National Skier Safety Month, you know we’ve been highlighting simple ways skiers and riders can make smart decisions on the mountain. From being aware of your surroundings to respecting trail signage and skiing in control, safety is about building good habits that help everyone enjoy the slopes. As the month continues, we’re taking a closer look at a piece of equipment that plays a critical role in personal injury prevention: your helmet!

The High Fives Foundation’s new #HelmetsAreCool documentary explores why helmet safety matters for skiers and riders of all ages and ability levels. Featuring professional athletes, medical professionals, and insights into modern helmet technology, the video breaks down how helmets are designed to absorb impact and protect the brain in the event of a fall or collision on the slopes. It is a reminder that wearing a properly fitted helmet is one of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of serious head injury.

Take a few minutes to watch the video and think about your own helmet habits, or those of your ski friends. Whether it is checking the fit, replacing an older helmet, or making sure everyone in your group is buckled up, small changes can make a big difference in staying safe and keeping the fun going run after run.

Be sure to stay tuned on our Instagram this weekend for a skier safety giveaway and get ready to test your own safety knowledge. For additional information and tips on skier safety, check out the Ski NH Safety Page.

Be Prepared for the Weather

We’re seeing some cold temperatures dropping in this weekend, but the conditions are stellar. So dressing for the weather will be a crucial part of staying safe and having fun, even when temperatures are low. Proper layering helps protect against the cold, wind, and moisture, especially during long lift rides and extended time outdoors. Make sure you have warm, moisture-wicking layers and protect exposed skin with insulated accessories like gloves, face coverings, and neck gaiters.

Not sure where to start? Check out our What to Wear page for tips on dressing for a safe (and comfortable!) day on the slopes.

Sustainability Spotlight: Sustainability & Snowmaking

A changing climate is reshaping recreation seasons across the Northeast, reducing natural snow reliability and increasing reliance on snowmaking technologies. Luckily, modern snowmaking is more efficient and environmentally conscious than ever. For years, many Ski NH members have been implementing various forward-thinking climate resilience strategies to make their snowmaking operations more “green” by:

  • Installing new systems that use high-efficiency compressors and smart temperature sensors to reduce energy and water consumption.
  • Installing high-efficiency snow guns that use up less water and energy.
  • Partnering with local utilities to purchase clean energy credits.
  • Transitioning to renewable electricity to power snowmaking systems, as well as lifts, resort lighting, heating systems, etc.

New Hampshire ski areas are working to be efficient and sustainable, and be good stewards of the lands where they operate. You can do your part too! Learn more about ski area efforts and how you can be a part of the solution at SkiNH.com/sustainability
