World Over 35 Water Ski Championships

October 29, 2012

Hello Skiers and Travelers,

In this newsletter we'll talk about the Sr. World's Water Ski Championships held this past week near Lake Chapala outside of Guadalajara, Mexico.  I'll have some photos from that event.  I'll also mention a golf and ski week featuring a Canadian pro golfer.

In the next newsletter I'll have a big story on a top pro slalom skier event I am trying to put together in Acapulco with prize money. I'll also have a story about our trip to Morelia, Mexico.  We are getting close on bottling our own Mezcal with a skier on the label!

Golf and Ski Week

I will also introduce a Golf and Ski Week for any athletes who want to both golf and ski.  It doesn't mean if you don't golf that you can't come. It means that if you want to either ski and golf or just golf, we'll have a golf pro here, Brett Cleverdon of Ontario, Canada.  The skiers will still receive the excellent coaching of whomever is coaching that week, and in the afteroon those who want to also golf will head over to Tres Vidas Golf Club for some time on the range and the course.  If we have golfers who do not ski, they will receive their lessons in the morning.

Besides having given 10,000 golf lessons. Brett is also a ten-time Long Drive Champion and trick shot artist.  Check out some of his shots at:

The week can be held as soon as December or in February.  Please write us if you are interested and let us know your date availability.

The Over 35 World Water Ski Championships (also called the Sr. World's)

The Lamadrid family of Guadalajara, Mexico and the Mexican Water Ski Federation hosted 128 skiers from around the world for the Over 35 World Water Ski Championships which ended yesterday in Lake Chapala, Mexico.  Stars like Andy Mapple, Kris LaPoint and Jennifer Leachman LaPoint were there along with other famous skiers like Scott (the rocketman) Ellis and long time pro Franz Oberleitner of Austria and Drew Ross of Canada.

The tournament was a huge success and the skiers all were blown away with the Mexican hospitality and of course the free Tequila from Herradura.

The skiers commented that the lake set up was the best they had ever experienced at a Sr. Worlds.  There were several tents and rarely were the skiers and spectators out in the sun.  The wind never blew more than about 5 or 6 mph and there was no backwash at the well designed lake.  The tournament went off without a hitch, thanks to the quality judges and organization.  It is a shame that more European skiers did not make it and some of the top U.S. skiers didn't make it.  I understand that some may have been worried about security and believe me, it's probably safer in Mexico that in many places in the U.S.   You could ask all of the 128 skiers and they'd say, "Security, it was never an issue."

Peace and calm don't make headlines, but our skiers sure did (with their skiing) in the local papers!

For results go to: www.fed-ea.org.  We do not know where the Sr. World's will be in two years but it's for certain at some time in the future they will be back to the Boca Laguna site here at Lake Chapala.

Another Senior Skier accelerates towards the next buoy at Boca Laguna.

Sr. Mens 2 on podium
U.S. skiers Todd Kuykendall and Greg Badal are on the victory stand with the greatest slalom skier of all time, Britain's Andy Mapple.

We heard the Stars Bangled Banner so many times for U.S. team members, it was nice to get another Anthem played, although I saw some Gringos singing it with different words.

FYI, "God Save the Queen" (or King depending on who is the monarch at the time) is the British National Anthem, and it's the same music for "My Country 'Tis of Thee."

Andy Mapple ran 1 1/2 @ 41 off to win the Senior Men's 2 title.  Andy will be the BIG FIVE OOOOOOOOh!  on Saturday, the 3rd of November.

Andy could be having those feelings of not wanting to get old because he recently spent some time at 36mph and he ran 41 off a couple of times!  Yikes!  He doesn't need to worry much, does he!!!

Wouldn't it be fun to see Andy at 50 take on the top skiers in the world!!!

Updated Guest Coaching Schedule

There will be times this season when we rent the entire villa out to non skiers and on those weeks we'll notify our coaches in advance.  We obviously will not do that when we have guests signed up already.  I mention this because we have rented the villa out this summer 8 times vs. once last summer!
