Self Defense Tip of the Week
How to Handle Self Defense Situations from Various Distances (Part 1 of 2)

Self Defense comes packaged in many forms. Martial Arts, combatives, firearms and chemical sprays to name a few. Some of these forms of self-defense have sub-sections. These sub sections break down the different martial arts and combative forms and then firearms themselves can break down into the different weapon systems that are out there.

To be a well-rounded self- defense practitioner you should be versed in the different aspects self-defense and the use of different self-defense weapons.

Know the Ranges of Combat. For example when someone is within touching range of me, in what ways can I handle this to defend myself? If the aggressor is within arm’s length, he can touch me, I can touch him, what tools in my self-defense box do I have to use to defend myself at the range. Finally, if the aggressor is at a distance and rapidly approaching how do I deal with that aggressive approach.

Next week I will break down the ranges of combat for you with some tools for you to use within each range.

Firearms Training Tip of the Week
Shooting a Handgun is a Continuous Study

Since the onslaught of Covid-19 Americans have be converging on their local gun shops to purchase firearms and ammunition. People who have never shot a handgun or rifle are standing in line at some stores for hours and making purchases of their first handgun and /or rifle along with ammunition. This is a good thing on the side that these people want to learn about the shooting sports and shooting for self-defense and self-preservation. After all it is their Second Amendment right! Right?

The issues I fear is that these same people will neglect getting proper training from a reputable Firearms Instructor. Learning to shoot from Uncle Charlie is fine, but in order to progress and get better you need someone that knows firearms, and also knows how to teach. There are many instructors out there today that can shoot a Gnat off a bulls butt at 100 yards with a handgun, but can’t teach it.

Taking one introductory class won’t cut it either. Shooting a handgun is a continuous study. Get yourself educated and continue to push yourself to get better. Understanding the rules and liability issues involved will keep you out of trouble.

Fitness Tip of the Week
Creating A Plan

Getting Started
With any workout routine sometimes the hardest part is getting started. The good news is, you don't have to do it alone. Finding a trainer, seeking out a registered dietician, physician and at home support system are all important components in your success.

Doing It At Home
It is important to set goals that are attainable, and reward yourself for small achievements. For example, rather than say that you need to lose 50 pounds, instead set a goal of 10 pounds. That way you can reach your goal, reward yourself and then set a new goal to lose another 10 pounds. Baby steps to success is the only way to keep yourself motivated.

Losing Weight
Add a healthy reduced caloric intake to your exercise routine. Basically, to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in.

Have Fun
Remember, the main point to any exercise routine is that you enjoy the process. If you don't, chances are you won't stick with it and it will leave you feeling frustrated for not losing weight and getting healthy.
