Skilled Workforce Program Summary

Last Friday, March 8th, we heard presentations discussing the shortage of students/youth pursuing the skilled trades and its impact on our workforce and on our communities. We were fortunate to hear from four experts: Scott Stallman, Provost at Dunwoody; Don Mullin, Saint Paul Building Trades Council Executive; Jill Stewart-Kellar of Northeast Metro 916 School District, and Ling Becker, Ramsey County’s Director of Workforce Solutions.

  • Scott Stallman shared that 31.2 million Americans between the ages of 18-28 feel like they don’t have a career path. By 2030, 62% of firms will struggle to fill positions. There is an incorrect perception that a 4-year degree is the path to financial independence and success, that skilled trades are physically taxing, dirty, and for men.
  • Don Mullin explained how we need to focus on engaging our student body. This includes introducing students to trades when they are underclassmen.
  • Jill Stewart-Kellar says that at 916 schools, they aim to enroll 100% of students post-graduation. Challenges for students includes obtaining resources and exposure and creating a customized educational experience
  • Ling Becker shared that 50% of Ramsey County’s population is under the age of 34 and went on to explain Ramsey County’s efforts in breaking down barriers of entry into the workforce.

What can your community do?
