Message from the CEO
The 2019 Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) marked another successful event as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of SCNC! The event was well attended with over 7,000 visiting students from Nova Scotia, who had the opportunity to discover the many careers in skilled trades and technology by participating in over 50 Try-A-Trade
®
and Technology activities. In attendance there were also many industry, labour, education and government representatives who were onsite to meet the students and inform them of the many exciting career options available to them. Also joining us this year to promote these lucrative and interesting careers were HGTVs Kate Campbell and Sebastian Clovis, and local celebrity chef Andy Hay. Thank you to everyone for making this such an impactful 25th anniversary event. A special thank you to all of our volunteers for their tireless efforts!
During SCNC 2019, we held the first WorldSkills Team Canada Selection Event where the two highest ranking age eligible participants in 29 Skills Areas battled it out for a spot on Team Canada. The winners and official members of WorldSkills Team Canada 2019 were announced at the Closing Ceremony. These 32 members will be heading off to Kazan in August to compete at the prestigious 45th WorldSkills Competition. We are very proud of their hard work and dedication and wish them the best of luck on their journey to the international stage.
Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) has begun planning for National Skilled Trades and Technology Week (NSTTW) which is taking place from November 3 to 10, 2019 across Canada. SCC and its Member Organizations will be hosting activities during this week to get Canadian youth interested in skilled trade and technology careers. SCC will be hosting the official launch of NSTTW on Tuesday, November 5, in Vancouver. Join us for this inspiring day of activities.
SCC along with Skills Canada British Columbia has begun preparations for the 26th Skills Canada National Competition which will be held May 28 and 29, 2020, at the Vancouver Convention Centre. This fall, members of our National Technical Committee and many of our SCNC partners will be meeting in Vancouver to develop the scope and projects for the 44 Skill Areas. SCC would like to thank all of its volunteers and partners for their continued support. We could not host an event of this magnitude without them. We hope to see you in Vancouver for SCNC 2020!

The National Alumni Committee Participate in a Leadership Training Hosted by WorldSkills
As part of their role on the Skills/Compétences Canada's National Alumni Committee (NAC), each member was offered the opportunity to participate in a leadership training workshop in Ottawa, last March. The training was developed by WorldSkills and crafted for Canadian leaders. NAC participants were asked to complete a series of activities that will help identify their key messages.
Over the course of three days, the trainers worked with NAC participants to shape their key messages for a variety of audiences and occasions to convey:
* How skills change lives
* The benefit of joining Provincial/Territorial associations
* The importance of careers in the Skilled Trades
* How SCC programming helped them in their training/careers
At the end of the training, each NAC member had a unique story to tell. They shared their experiences on following their passion, the commitment it takes to achieve personal excellence, and the value of developing a culture that celebrates the value of skills.

SCC Alumni have much to offer, and it is important to keep them involved to help inspire Canadian youth to follow in their footsteps and to learn from their career journeys.
NAC's ultimate goal is supporting the provincial and territorial Alumni Associations through best practices, industry connections, exposure, incentives and volunteer opportunities!
Onsite at SCNC 2019, the
Committee members also actively participated in the promotion of skilled trades and technologies through social media, videos and meetings. This included addressing competitors at the Opening Ceremony, speaking to Essential Skills Forum participants, and participating in a segment of ES Talks.

UA Hosts Young Women in Construction Conference
At the 2019 Skills Canada National Competition, held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, UA Canada hosted its first Young Women in Construction Conference.
The conference began by introducing a variety of Tradeswomen from across the country, including celebrity Tradeswomen Kate Campbell of many HGTV home improvements shows.
Each of the Tradeswomen went to the podium and shared their stories. While each story was unique, they all had one thing in common - how happy they were to be working in the construction trades. They spoke of the pride they take in their work and being able to create something that will be enjoyed by many people for many years to come. They also spoke of the freedom that a career in the trades can bring.
After sharing their stories, the Tradeswomen returned to their tables where they had various items from each of their trades. Conference guests were then invited to move around the room, approaching the Tradeswomen at the tables to speak to them and ask their questions.

J.D. Irving, Limited and Partners Celebrate
World Youth Skills Day
July is the month we celebrate World Youth Skills Day and the team at J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) is working with many amazing partners to expose and support young people in a rewarding future in the trades.
New Brunswick Teen Apprenticeship Program (NBTAP)
Since 2013, JDI has proudly participated in The New Brunswick Teen Apprentice Program (NBTAP), an industry-led apprenticeship program for grade 10 and 11 students. This program provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in skilled trades to benefit from a paid work experience with a mentor. NBTAP student apprentices learn practical trade and workplace skills that will help them get a head start. Over their summer work terms, students are coached and mentored on the job, learning practical trade and workplace skills.
PALS En Route to Success
PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) En Route to Success is offered at the high school level for students attending St. Malachy's Memorial High School in Saint John, NB. This four year program provides opportunities for ninth grade students, who are selected by the faculty to participate and gain hands-on experience with mentors in the workplace.
Since 2012, 35 students have enrolled in this unique program, and attained credits that fulfill part of their graduation requirements as outlined by the Department of Education in New Brunswick. These students were able to gain hands-on experience and learn by doing. Research shows that this is the most meaningful method of learning for students.
Place aux Compétences (PAC)
Kent Homes, located in Bouctouche, NB, is a proud partner of a community-focused mentorship program called Place aux Compétences (PAC). Now in its eighth year, the program has a high success rate - giving local high school students an opportunity to learn valuable in-class training and on-the-job skills in various construction and carpentry trades, as well as grow self-esteem and confidence.
This year, nine students did an eight week work term and four of them were hired full time. In addition, six summer students were trained and hired through the program this year.
Halifax Shipyard - Pathways Programs
The establishment of the Irving Shipbuilding Centre of Excellence at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) was designed to provide opportunities and support for Nova Scotians to find careers in shipbuilding, with a focus on underrepresented communities. This initiative has led to training and employment opportunities for women, indigenous Canadians, and African Nova Scotians.
At J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) we are committed to empowering our youth with education, skill-training and employment opportunities. JDI forecasts 7,500 full time hires over the next three years and over 700 of those roles are for skilled trades. Contributed by: J.D. Irving, Limited
