Skin Cancer Awareness

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage can also cause wrinkles and blotches or spots on your skin. The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented, and it can almost always be cured when it's found and treated early.

ilumina is proud to participate in Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. During the month of May, join us in taking action to prevent skin cancer and reduce the risk of UV damage.

Living in the desert can be brutal to our skin. Take these simple steps today to protect yourself:

  • Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
  • Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
  • Check your skin regularly for changes.
ABC's of Skin Cancer

Regular full body self exams can help detect early signs of skin cancer. To spot non-melanoma (basal cell or squamous cell) cancers or the deadliest form, melanoma look for new moles or growths or any changes in existing moles. Any moles or lesions that itch, bleed, or don't heal can also be alarm signals. Here are some guidelines to look for when doing a self exam. Anything suspicious looking should be checked by a Dermatologist.

A- Asymmetry, if you draw a line through the center of the mole and the two halves don't match

B- Border, uneven, scalloped or notched around the edges

C- Color, a mixture of shades of brown, tan or black

D- Diameter, larger than an eraser head

E- Evolving, any change in size, shape or color

Cancer: No Amount of Alcohol Is Safe

When it comes to cancer no amount of alcohol is safe according to the 2014 World Cancer Report (WCR), issued by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Alcohol was declared a carcinogen in 1988 but as a society we seem to deny any relation with light to moderate drinking and many health gurus even advocate a glass of red wine for cardiovascular health.  However, there is an increased risk of cancer and the risk increases with the amount to alcohol consumed regardless of it being beer, wine or spirits.

A causal relationship exists between alcohol consumption and cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, colon-rectum, liver, and female breast; a significant relationship also exists between alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer. Links have also been made between alcohol consumption and leukemia; multiple myeloma; and cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, and skin, but fewer studies have looked at these relationships and more research is needed to establish a confirmed association. For bladder, lung, and stomach cancers, the evidence for an alcohol-cancer link is conflicting.

Although the biological mechanisms that mediate alcohol-related cancer are not fully understood alcoholic beverages can contain at least 15 carcinogenic compounds. Alcohol can work against the absorption of folate and impair DNA, increase estrogen levels and the activity of insulin-like growth factor receptors, which can stimulate mammary cell proliferation in breast cancer.

The current advice is to limit alcohol intake to one alcoholic beverage for women and two for men 3 days per week. That is if you choose to consume alcohol at all. Maybe challenge yourself to take a break for 30 days and see how your health changes- you may not want to go back.

Mineral Sunscreen
One of our favorite sunscreen is from the organic skin care line Leaf People. Their SPF 28 has a light lavender scent and can be used for the face and body without feeling heavy and greasy. The ingredients are safe for the entire family to use making it the perfect sunscreen to enhance the skin's radiance with pure, raw botanicals and boost your skin care routine.
The Lending Library at ilumina
One of the many services and benefits of being a patient at ilumina is the access you have to our lending library. We have collected books and resources on a variety of subjects that we feel may be helpful to our patients. We lend these out for two weeks at time as a chance for our patients to preview a book they may want to purchase or just as a way to help educate. Some topics we include are fertility, diet, pregnancy, meditation, feng shui, and essential oils.

We only ask that the books are returned by the due date and that they are cared for. We have every borrower sign a form that they will do those things and in the case that something happens to the book or that it is not returned, we consider it purchased and charge the replacement amount.

We are currently doing an audit of our library and ask your help in returning any past due books. We will be contacting those who still might have materials out. Moving forward we will be holding borrowers accountable to the agreement so that we can continue to have this benefit and tool.
