October 2014

After 20 years of research and development in natural and organic skin care, my journey has taken me places I had never dreamed.

About six years ago I started my own skin care line. Shortly afterward, I wrote and published my first book titled The Care and Keeping of Sensitive Skin. During the publishing process I decided to go back to school for esthetics. It was a big step in the right direction and I never looked back.

I have been a Licensed Managing Esthetician for going on five years now thanks to my supportive friends and family, and many loyal clients. I wouldn't trade my journey for anything.

Now that I have my own private practice, which I opened at 480 S. Broad St., Suite A, exactly one year ago, I plan to take every opportunity I can to continue learning and growing so that I can provide my clients with the best possible products and services available.

So, in an effort to garner local support and to grow my business, I have applied for a Mission Mainstreet Grant with Chase Bank for Lissa's Natural Skin Care and my line of products, Lissa's Naturals.

In order to qualify, I need 250 votes of support within the next 14 days. Please visit https://www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/business/detail/46827 to cast your vote. And please tell everyone you know! Thanks for your support!

The following recipes are from EcoBeauty: Scrubs, Rubs, Masks, and Bath Bombs for You and Your Friends, by Lauren Cox with Janice Cox:

Milk Maid Cleanser

This cleanser is perfect for sensitive skin. The baking soda clears away dead skin cell build-up, while the milk and egg white nourish and firm the skin. It will give your skin a healthy glow.

 cup distilled water

cup whole milk, goat's milk, coconut milk, almond milk or hemp milk

2 tablespoons baking soda

1 egg white

Stir all of the ingredients together until well mixed. Pour the cleanser into a clean container with a tight-fitting lid and store it in the refrigerator, where it will keep for 2 to 3 weeks.

To use:

Pour a small amount onto a clean, wet washcloth and gently massage it into your face and neck. Rinse well with warm water, then pat your skin dry.

Cereal Cleansing Grains

Oatmeal, cornmeal, and wheat germ are full of vitamins and minerals, and with their gritty texture they clean and refresh your skin, leaving it smoother and brighter.

2 tablespoons rolled oats

2 tablespoons cornmeal

2 tablespoons wheat germ

Stir all of the ingredients together until well mixed, then store in an airtight container.

To use:

Combine 1 or 2 teaspoons of the mixture with an equal amount of water to create a paste. Mix in the palm of your hand and massage this paste gently into damp skin. Rinse well with warm water, then pat your skin dry.

Bye-Bye Blackheads Scrub

Baking soda will lift the bacteria and dead skin from your face, leaving your skin fresh and glowing.

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking soda

2 tablespoons water

Stir all of the ingredients together until well mixed.

To use:

Massage the entire mixture into damp skin and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse well with warm water, then pat your skin dry.

Bunny Love Mask

Carrots contain beta-carotene, and vitamins A and C. Beta carotene is an antioxidant and can help reduce the effects of too much sun. The clay will help to strip away impurities and clean your pours.

 cup fresh carrot juice

 cup white clay

Stir the carrot juice and the clay together until smooth. Spoon the mixture into a clean container with a tight-fitting lid and store it in the refrigerator for one week.

To use:

After cleansing, spread about half of the mixture over your face and neck, avoiding the delicate areas around your eyes and mouth. Leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse well with warm followed by cool water, and pat your skin dry.

Get-the-Red-Out Facial Mask

Sensitive skin can become red and irritated. This soothing mask is great for combating redness. Yogurt cools and calms irritated skin.

cup plain whole yogurt or sour cream

2 tablespoons honey

Stir the yogurt and honey together until smooth.

To use:

After cleansing, spread the entire mixture on your face and neck, avoiding the delicate areas around your eyes and mouth. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse well with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Pumpkin Pie Mask

Pumpkin contains powerful antioxidants as well as alpha hydroxyl acids, so it removes dead skin cells while protecting the underlying layer and helping it to retain moisture.

 cup canned pumpkin puree

2 tablespoons vanilla yogurt or sour cream

1 tablespoon honey

Stir all of the ingredients together until you have a smooth paste. Spoon the mask into a clean container with a tight-fitting lid and store it in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks.

To use:

After cleansing, spread 1 tablespoon of the mask over your face and neck, avoiding the delicate areas around your eyes and mouth. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse well with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Green Tea Toner

Green tea is a powerful antioxidant because it is rich in polyphenols, which help to slow down damage to your skin from the environment.

 cup distilled water

1-2 green tea bags

Bring water to a boil. Place the tea in a clean, heat-proof bowl and pour in the boiling water. Steep for 2-3 minutes, then remove the tea bags or strain out the tea leaves and allow the liquid to cool before pouring it into a clean bottle with a tight-fitting lid.

To use:

Apply the toner to your face using a clean cotton ball.
