Spinning into Summer

August is prime bike season in Tahoe. While everyone else is waiting in traffic, you can be pedaling past the line of cars with a smile. This month is packed with ways to get involved, from fun volunteer opportunities to Bike Kitchen events where you can get your bike rolling smoothly for the rest of summer.

South Lake Safety Upgrades Wrap Up!

The massive $35.9 million Caltrans safety project along US 50 (Lake Tahoe Boulevard) between the "Y" and Pioneer Trail has officially concluded active construction as of June 2026, with final finishing touches and crosswalk installations tracking through this summer.

Here is what you need to know before your next ride through town:

Enhanced Bike Lanes

  • High-Visibility Green: Crews repainted and highlighted bicycle lanes running through the US 50 corridor.
  • Separation Markings: Upgraded striping creates clearer boundaries between drivers and riders.

New Mid-Block Crosswalks

  • South Tahoe Middle School: A brand-new mid-block crosswalk features a high-visibility pedestrian beacon system.
  • Herbert Ave & Ski Run Blvd: Upgraded crossings with high-visibility markings and flashing beacons.
  • Winnemucca Ave & River Dr (Grocery Outlet): Newly integrated lighted pedestrian crossings protect people walking to local paths.

Infrastructure & Lighting

  • New Signal at Johnson Blvd: A complete traffic signal is now active at the intersection of US 50 and Johnson Boulevard.
  • 200+ New Streetlights: Enhanced night visibility along the corridor driven by 47,000 feet of new underground electrical conduit.

Volunteer Opportunities

We've got tons of opportunities to get involved this summer all around the lake. Help park bikes while jamming to live music!

Fridays - August 14, 24, 28: Kings Beach Music on the Beach

Sundays - August 16, 23, 30: Concerts at Commons Beach in Tahoe City

Saturday August 29 - Tahoe Brewfest

Volunteers can look forward to sampling 40 breweries and beverages, supporting over 20 craft vendors, and enjoying a day filled with live DJs, games, and local bites along Ski Run Blvd, stretching from Alder to Tamarack.

Thank You Whittell High Senior Class!

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition extends its heartfelt appreciation to the students and parents of the George Whittell High School Senior Class, as well as the many community members who volunteered to support the bike valet at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Edgewood Tahoe from July 8–12.

Thanks to their dedication and hard work, volunteers contributed an impressive 237 hours of service and successfully parked 935 bicycles and scooters over the 5-day event. Their efforts helped provide a convenient, sustainable transportation option for event attendees while contributing to the event’s overall success.

In the News:

CHP pursues, stops 15-year-old riding recklessly on electric motorcycle

We're encouraged to see the California Highway Patrol increasing enforcement of reckless e-motorcycle riding in our community. Targeting dangerous behavior—like excessive speed, unsafe passing, and riding illegally on public roads—helps protect everyone, including young riders, people walking and biking, and drivers. Safe, responsible riding is the key to keeping Tahoe's streets welcoming for all. Read more here: Tahoe Daily Tribune article.
