Election Days Are Here Again!

  General election: February 28, 2023

Runoff election: April 4, 2023

Chicago’s general election for Mayor, City Clerk, City Treasurer, Alderpeople and the new Police District Councils is February 28, 2023 and the runoff is April 4, 2023.

Get to know the mayoral candidates! On Wednesday January 18 at noon, Skyline Village Chicago and the Center for Life & Learning are hosting a Mayoral Forum on Aging at Fourth Presbyterian Church.

Did you know? Chicago’s over 55 population equals 591,700. Add 50-54 year-olds and the population jumps to 755,700 which is approximately 27% of the 2,792,099 total population. We add a lot of revenue to our city! Let’s ask the mayoral candidates what their plans are to ensure that all Chicagoans are able to thrive in their neighborhoods and communities as they age.

Weigh in! Do you have a question for the mayoral candidates? Send to info@SkylineVillageChicago.org. Write “Mayor Question” on Subject line.

New this year. February’s municipal elections are not just about the race for Chicago’s mayor. There are also candidates running for brand new positions in the twenty-two newly-formed Police District Councils. The councils will be liaisons between the community and the local police district. Most of Skyline Village Chicago members live in Chicago’s 18th police district. Sign up to receive more information on the 18th district candidates from the League of Women Voters of Chicago.

Thank you for your participation in this important election.

The Skyline Village Board of Directors thanks you for your support throughout the year, and wishes all of you a very Happy and Healthy New Year in 2023.

Philadelphia

By Beth Najberg

Philadelphia PA is an underappreciated, delightful city to visit. My companion and I traveled on Amtrak from suburban NJ to downtown Philadelphia in about an hour.

City Hall is at the Center with four hubs radiating from it. Each hub has fascinating architecture and history, all walkable. We stayed in a hotel beautifully located near 12th and Market Street in Center City. We took public transportation and walked everywhere. Reading Street Market is nearby, an amazing make with every type of food Philly is known for, including soft pretzels.

Washington Square is southeast of City Hall; it includes Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The US Park Service gives wonderful tours. It reminds us how Philadelphia was the center of the United States in the 18th century. Near Franklin Square is Elfreth’s Alley where people live in row houses dating back to the 18th century.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is northwest of City Hall. You might recognize the front from the 1976 movie, when Sylvester Stallone runs up the 76 stairs. The art is well curated, while the building, completed in 1928, has an austere feel. We walked through the park to the Barnes Foundation. Fascinating, but not as extensive as I had expected.

The fourth hub, southwest, is Rittenhouse Square, the Gold Coast of Philadelphia proper. We didn’t eat in a chain restaurant once - quite refreshing! Lots of creative restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner, all excellent. The picture of me is at Sam’s Morning Glory Diner on Tenth Street, not elegant like Park Brasserie in Rittenhouse Square, but equally delicious.

Florida

By Anna Rappaport

My winter community in Florida has a number of people who are interested in music; various groups share their music with the community. The Notables are a singing group; their members are auditioned for participation. The sketches are of this group, as soloists and together, at their 2022 Christmas concert.

Another Christmas event, the Craft Fair, gives us the opportunity to share and display our work. My drawing shows the Craft Fair. At the fair, several of us who sketch shared a table where we had cards and prints made from our drawings.

We occasionally have block parties, a good place to meet people you don’t know, and to mix with a group of neighbors. The sketch is from the 2022 Halloween block party.

Berlin

By Phyllis and Michael Mitzen

We just returned from a two week trip to Berlin where Michael’s choir, Kol Zimrah-Jewish Community Singers, was invited to perform at the Louis Lewandowski Festival. They performed 3 Concerts - at the Neue Synagogue, at the St. Nicholas Church and Concert Hall in Potsdam, and finally at the Rykestrasse Synagogue - the largest (seats 1,074) and most beautiful synagogue in Germany.

We also visited Lewandowski’s grave in one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries. His gravestone reads, “Love Makes the Melody Immortal”. His liturgy lives on in synagogues around the world.

After the Festival we stayed in Berlin to experience this vibrant and history-laden city. The history was everywhere - including the ‘stumbling stones’, 6 of which were in the ground in front of our hotel. Each stone is inscribed with the name of a Jewish person who had lived in that place before the war. These can be found all over Berlin.

Wannsee was another stop, an idyllic setting outside of Berlin where, in 1942, 14 men, 9 of whom were lawyers, crafted a detailed plan to exterminate all the Jews in Europe.

A highlight of the trip for us was a night at the Berlin Philharmonic. Just seeing and hearing that orchestra was a thrill. The original hall was destroyed during the war and rebuilt in the 1980s. Its vineyard design with wrap-around seating has been replicated in concert halls around the world.

We visited the Reichstag (German parliament) which was damaged and restored with a grand glass, solar powered dome. It retains graffiti that had been left by Russian soldiers after the war. We climbed to the top of the dome for beautiful views of the city. Finally, we took a sobering trip to Track 17, the train depot where the final deportation of Jews from Berlin took place on Phyllis’ 3rd birthday, March 27, 1942.

We enjoyed many delightful meals, rode the trains, toured and wandered. Berlin is a vibrant city, mindful of its history.
