Note From Skyline Village Chicago Board | |
Happy New Year!
The board of Skyline Village Chicago requests the pleasure of your company in an all-out active year of building community, making friends and joining forces in our new freedom to keep hope alive. Watch for our newsletter and announcements in your inbox this year.
Speaking of freedom, we offer the following rallying cry from the late David Brower (1912–2000), former head of the Sierra Club and founder of Friends of the Earth. Some may think it’s too late to save the planet, too late to speak up for American values we hold dear. But as David Brower reminds us, age has brought us a new freedom. Let’s use it. Bat your fear out of the park. Run the bases shouting free!
VOICE OF AN ELDER: LATE FREEDOM
"At my age, they can't do much to hurt me. I have a new freedom. They can't change my career, I've got it made. If I go to jail or am executed, it doesn't matter--though I'd rather stick around. I'd rather be out of jail than in, but not at the expense of this new-found freedom. Young people don't have this liberty. They've got years ahead of them, families, need for income. They can't alienate themselves too much from the system. I say to people my age, 'You have this freedom. Please use it. You've had a role in whatever's happened to the earth, and it hasn't been that good. You now have a role in doing something about it. If you're going to die, make sure your boots are on. There are so many of us… More and more of us….. You've got to sound off. The older you are, the freer you are, as long as you last.

Purposeful Retirement
Combining Passions and Service for Impact
The Center for Life and Learning and the Volunteer Ministry Council at Fourth Church invite you to join a cohort who are nearing retirement or have recently retired to collaborate and support each other in combining their passions and service for greater impact.
The SHAPE model developed by Rick Warren and Erik Rees will be used to combine your heart —the roles you love, the people you want to help, the needs you like to meet, and the causes you care about)—with your abilities or talents. You will get a glimpse of your unique purpose for your retirement.

Skyline Village Chicago has a long history of advocating for pedestrian safety. You see the results of this work with the “bump-outs” or rubber bollards at the corner of Michigan and Delaware, and the lengthening of the east-west crossing lights on Michigan Ave (though we still need them to be longer).
The Chicago Department of Transportation’s new Division of Planning and Policy put together the survey below to better understand the issues and programs you would like CDOT to research or develop.
Please take a moment and fill out this survey. “Pedestrian Safety” is a good enough issue but feel free to add details to what that may mean for you.
TAKE THE SURVEY
The deadline to submit your response is January 31, 2025.
At www.chicago.gov/cdot, you can read more about the services and programs within all ten divisions of CDOT. At a high level, they include infrastructure management (streets, sidewalks, bridges, traff signals, etc.), walking and biking safety and access, permitting activities and utility management on the public way, and implementing clean transportation policies and programs
