Note From Skyline Village Chicago Board
What's Our Legacy?

Dear Friends,

We thought 2021 was a terrible year but so far, 2022 is worse! Pesky questions about our legacy are raising their ugly heads. What are we leaving behind?

In the great democracy experiment, our freedoms in the United States have always been secure. Our rights protected. We now face an erosion of hard-fought women’s rights. No matter how you look at it, that alone is destabilizing for families and communities. Gun policies have further eroded our faith in government and for that matter, our protections under the law.

Climate change policies are under attack by the Supreme Court. Freedom of religion is twisting in the wind. And there are signs that more freedoms and protections are in jeopardy.

Our legacy, the future we hoped to leave for the people we care about—children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors—seems to be melting like ice cream off a soggy cone.

it’s easy to say ‘well, we tried’, but that doesn’t feel right. We can’t let go of the idea that
we as individuals, and collectively, can make a difference. We at Skyline continue to advocate for issues important to us as older adults. At this stage of our lives, we commit to where we are, to what’s at hand. We hope our legacy will be a softening of ageism, which is as rampant and insidious as any “ism”, so that those who approach the second half of life do not experience the stark discrimination we have. We commit to speaking out still. We commit to voting. We commit to making the world safer and saner in our own small ways.

Thank you for joining us.

SKYLINER EXPEDITIONS
Happy summer everyone! We predicted in the last newsletter that some of us would be complaining about the heat by now. Sure enough, I have enjoyed three lovely concerts by the Grant Park Music Festival, despite the heat, and haven’t run into any of you in the pavilion. Please photograph and write up what you have done instead, in summer or before. Send it to judy.karlov@gmail.com in mid to late August for the September-October newsletter.
Flowers
By Sydney Feuchtwanger

You can tell by the many lush, blooming flowers that summer has arrived in Streeterville, where I live. I photographed these beauties with my iPhone as I wandered around the neighborhood.
