Note From Skyline Village Chicago Board

Dear Friends, Neighbors and Members,

Are you sitting in your reading chair ignoring stories about “AI” because “that’s for young people”? Perhaps it is, but how about showing up to an intergenerational event to show what sixty, seventy or eighty-somethings look like, think like, talk like? Articles keep saying we’re wise. How about giving some of that wisdom away? Oh, and take a scoop of curiosity with you, for good measure!

Netroots Nation is holding its annual convention at the Chicago Hilton from July 13—July 15 with Mayor Brandon Johnson as their keynote speaker. You may remember hearing about Netroots Nation when President Joe Biden paid their convention a surprise visit. You never know who is going to show up!

The Netroots Nation organizers value citizen elders and have offered Skyline Village Chicago a greatly reduced discount. Register under the “Youth Ticket” for this special rate. Use ‘Skyline Village Chicago’ as your organization. For more information on the group, and to register, click here: Netroots Nation Chicago 2023

There’s lots more summer fun on the horizon from the Beatles Sing Along July 30, to Movies in the Park, to free concerts to Skyline Village lunches. We hope to see you around the neighborhood this summer. Let us know if there’s a particular kind of event you’d like us to highlight.

Thank you Rep. Kam Buckner!

We’re so excited to finally be hosting our famous Friday Forum lunches again. On June 30, we were honored to have State Representative Kam Buckner speak to our citizen elders about the state budget, the Bears, rank choice voting, which member Abigail Nichols is spearheading, and the Aging Equity Act. Our president Phyllis Mitzen along with others in Illinois’ field of aging have been in contact with Governor Pritzker’s office about this initiative. Read about and add your comments to the Aging Equity Act here. Thank you Abigail for your activism. And thank you Kam Buckner for paying attention!

The Healing Art of Gardening at The Boulevard—Restoring Health and Rebuilding Lives

The Boulevard is a residential place of healing for ill and injured homeless men and women who have come from the hospital and have nowhere to go. It is located on the west side of Chicago near The Garfield Park Conservatory. The Boulevard offers residents a warm, safe and caring place to live while they regain their health and rebuild their lives. Residents receive medical care from the onsite health clinic, behavioral health services from a licensed clinical social worker, and a substance abuse evaluation and referral to treatment if needed. Each resident has their own case manager who helps them rebuild their lives and obtain stable housing. Not one resident is discharged back to the street and 72% leave The Boulevard with stable housing.

Nancy & Tom Hanson have been marred for 62 years and have always been involved in volunteer work. Nancy began gardening at the Boulevard over 20 years ago when she retired. She was a founding member of The Boulevard, formerly Interfaith House. She still serves ion the Board and the Advisory Council. Eight years agoNancy & Tom moved from the suburbs to a downtown high rise and Tom joined Nancy gardening at The Boulevard. Nancy, a retired social worker, worked in adoption services, as an Executive Director for a hospice program, and finally as a jack of all trades at the Illinois Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Tom had his own manufacture’s rep business in commercial heating and air conditioning products. They have two adult sons—one in North Hollywood, California. The other lives in Evanston with his wife and two children.

SKYLINER EXPEDITIONS 2023

We love sharing our members' expeditions and photos and we want to hear from more of you. Remember...whether you go to some faraway place or just have a nearby experience, let us know. You may discover something right around the corner that nobody else knows about. Or maybe your travels take you to another state or country. Write all about it and send a photo or two. Please send anytime to: KRoss850@gmail.com and please include "SVC News" in the subject line. Karen Ross.

Long-time SVC member, Anna Rappaport, displays her urban sketching skills both here in Chicago and Florida. Catch these great views from Wolf Point at the Chicago River that she sketched with other artist friends at the Blue Bottle Coffee Shop on Orleans across from the Merchandise Mart. On a windy, rainy day, Anna said that from here one can see the part of the river where it makes a "T" and the east-west part of the river flows into the north-south part. Sounds like a good outing to catch this same vision. Thanks, Anna

Roberta Cohen has the right idea...Friday Craft Days. Treating herself to a lesson at Beadniks in Wicker Park, she created this beautiful bracelet. Can't wait to see some of your other creations, Roberta.

Many of our friends are back to in-person as well as hybrid and

online classes and events.
