Dear Friends,

Are you Aging in Place?

Aging in place refers to the choice to live in your current building and neighborhood as you grow older. Some are faced with moving to a building with elder care services, but a new video from ENGAGE-IL and the City of Chicago shows how some services can be brought to you in your building.  Additionally, The Seniors Connected brochure brings online programming and classes directly to your home. See https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/fss/supp_info/SeniorServices/SeniorsConnectedBrochure.pdf

Building management staff are the first line of contact for identifying healthcare problems with residents. Educating building managers, door people and maintenance crews will help create an environment where all will be able to help with the needs of older adult residents, particularly those with memory or cognitive problems.

“ENGAGE-IL” has created a training video for high rise residential buildings with information and resources on managing aging residents.

Pass this information along to your building management company. Ask them to require the building staff to view it. Perhaps you can get it in your building’s newsletter. Have a watch party in your unit and discuss the information with your neighbors. It’s free. The video is Chicago-specific with updated contact information for elder care services.

Respectfully,

*This program is brought to you by the Chicago Area Villages Collaborative, as the first session of our End-of-Life Series. Stay posted for information about our August, September and October sessions of this series.

Join us for an informational session about planning for end-of-life care, including how to communicate and document your wishes and values with your healthcare team. Advance Care Planning is for everyone, not just those with a serious illness. An illness or injury can often come without warning. If you plan now, you can make sure that the medical treatment you get in the future will be the treatment you would want. We will provide an overview of Illinois advanced care planning documents including Living Will, Power of Attorney, Practitioner Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment, and more. Attendees will get early access to sign-ups for individual consultations, including guided completion of advanced directives and document sharing with healthcare providers.
