Note From Skyline Village Chicago Board

Dear Friends,

In February, Skyline Village Chicago, in collaboration with the Center for Life and Learning, hosted a forum on “Redesigning Michigan Avenue”*, featuring Scott Hurst, Lead Designer at Gensler Architects. Scott is part of The Urban Land Institute Chicago-North Michigan Technical Assistance Panel. Urban Land Institute, a multidisciplinary real estate forum, convened industry leaders and policy makers to imagine new land use planning, long-term investment and sustainable development for North Michigan Avenue.

The vision to reimagine this economic driver of Chicago, as well as the main thoroughfare of our neighborhood, featured imaginative ideas to generate commercial and tourist excitement. But it also gave a strong nod to humanizing the mile from the river to the lake – wider sidewalks, places to sit, modifying traffic patterns to accommodate pedestrians of all abilities, bikers, and motorized vehicles. It envisioned places for people to sit and take in the hustle and bustle, and each other. But what Scott presented was only a vision. As the plan evolves to improve the commercial viability of our beloved Mag Mile, we need to advocate for the elements that will make our Michigan Avenue neighborhood friendly – accessible and safe for pedestrians to stroll, and congregate in a beautiful and fascinating setting.

Contact Ian Tobin at the Magnificent Mile Association for updates on Michigan Avenue and advocate for a more pedestrian friendly, greener, wider and safer sidewalk space. Ian Tobin, Director of Planning and Placemaking: itobin@themagnificentmile.com.

The 18th District Chicago Community Policing Office and the Chicago Fire Department present a Fire Safety Presentation for High Rises

Do you know the most common cause of fires in high rises? In the midst of a frigid 2022 winter, the Chicago Fire Department issued a plea for the thousands of city residents who live in high-rise buildings to take caution if there is a fire. It’s important to develop a fire escape plan so you are as prepared as possible.

"They're vertical towns," says Chicago Fire Department District Chief Walter Schroeder. U.S. fire departments respond to an estimated average of 14,500 reported fires in high-rise buildings per year.

Join us to learn about fire safety in high rises, including: fire behavior, building evacuation, common causes and kitchen safety. Don’t let this be your headline: “Woman dies in Lake Shore Drive high-rise fire” (Chicago Tribune January 09, 2012).

The Geriatric Emergency Room During and After the Covid Pandemic

Dr. Scott Dresden, Director, Geriatric Emergency Department Innovations (GEDI), Northwestern Hospital

Tuesday, March 22, 2022
12:00 - 1:00 pm CT

Free!
Has the Covid pandemic changed the way the aging population is treated in the ER? Dr. Dresden explains what to expect --today and in the future -- when older adults find themselves in the ER, how caregivers and family members can help, and how to ask for help in negotiating and understanding wait times, tests, treatment, discharge instructions and admittance.

Northwestern Hospital is part of the nationwide Geriatric Emergency Department Initiative (GEDI), a program designed to better serve older patients in the emergency department. In the past few years ERs have seen an increase from 65 to 85 in the average age of older patients. The traditional emergency department does a good job of fixing you after you have a medical incident like falling or breathing problems. The geriatric emergency department helps you figure out how not to fall again and treatment plans for your breathing.

Note: Geriatrics, or geriatric medicine, is a specialty that focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. There’s no right age to start seeing a geriatric specialist. A geriatrician can be helpful if 1) you suffer from multiple medical conditions, 2) find that treatment for one medical condition negatively affects a second condition, 3) are experiencing functional decline or physical frailty, 4) have a disease associated with aging, such as dementia, incontinence or osteoporosis, and 5) manage multiple medications (especially if they’re causing side effects that interfere with your well-being).

Gatorland
By Anna Rappaport

Recently I visited Gatorland, in Orlando, Florida. There are a lot of birds there—cormorants, white ibis, flamingos, and egrets. There’s a breeding marsh, and many egrets and cormorants nest in trees there in the spring. It’s great to see the birds’ breeding plumage, nests, trees, and vines with red berries, yellow flowers, and small white buds.

There are some beautiful sunrises over the lake in our community.
Singapore
By Judi Chapnick

After flying through numerous hoops, my husband, Barry, and I left for a 2+ month winter escape in Singapore to be with our son and daughter-in-law. Location: just above the equator. The weather here is hot, humid, and rainy. We overlook the harbor and the supply chain.

80% of Singapore’s 5.5 million people live in public housing, which is run by the government, but similar to apartments and condos.
Left: Chinese New Year

Right: Shophouses, restored, on the Singapore River
Left: Merlion, part mermaid and part lion, is the symbol of Singapore (which is a city, a state, and a country.)

Right: The Marina Bay Sands Hotel, designed by architect Moshe Safdie for developer Sheldon Adelson, includes a very upscale shopping center and a convention center.
