Note From Skyline Village Chicago Board
|
|
Dear Friends,
Skyline Village Chicago has been advocating for adult exercise equipment in the Chicago parks ever since Skyline President Phyllis Mitzen toured Shanghai’s public parks in 2015 with Chicago Sister Cities International.
Well, it’s here! As Margaret Mead would say: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world!”
Alderman Brian Hopkins and the Lake Shore Park Advisory Council with help from State Representative Kam Buckner were instrumental in making the park enticing to playful adults. The April 25 ribbon-cutting attended by Chicago Park District Superintendent and CEO Rosa Escareño, and organized by Lake Shore Park Advisory Council President Dave Kostelansky introduced us to the new equipment. The Lake Shore Park Adult Wellness Area is not just for exercise, but a place to meet friends and neighbors for a chat and fun. With this new installation, Chicago hospitality is on full display in Lake Shore Park. We are an age-friendly, open, livable city— for all ages!
Go play!

Skyline Village Chicago, SOAR, Chicago Hyde Park Village and South Loop Village hosted Illinois State Representative, the Hon. Kam Buckner at an end-of-session recap of the Illinois General Assembly. Click on the recording to discover how the state legislature has taken steps to revitalize the economy, stem retail violence and create a greener Chicago.
If you watch Chicago Tonight you may have noticed lately Rep. Kam Buckner talks a lot about legislative policies that help Chicago. Kam represents the lakefront from Oak Street to Hyde Park. He’s sponsored legislation to help train & hire hotel, restaurant and retail workers, create safer streets for pedestrians, stem street crime, solve the rising lakefront and clean the environment.

Thank you to Thousand Waves for April Zoom Class on Self Defense for Skyline Members.

What is Self-Defense?
Think ♦ Yell ♦ Run ♦ Fight ♦ Tell
Think
- Assertiveness – Present yourself assertively: in voice, body and eyes.
- Awareness – Violence can come from strangers, acquaintances, friends, and family
- Intuition – Listen to the messages your body sends about possible danger
- Attitude – Believe you are worth defending and that you can do it!
- Act – Take action! Try something! If it doesn’t work, change strategies.
Yell
- Energy – Get energy flowing. Scare the attacker. Summon assistance.
- Voice – Set limits, enforce personal boundaries, calm someone down, speak up for others, take charge of the situation.
- Volume and Intensity – Adjust as needed. Show you’re willing to cause a scene or show your ability to control the situation by communicating assertively
Run
- Escape – Run away. Avoid danger. Get off the elevator. Leave the relationship.
-
Instincts – Trust them; Think “What do I need to be safe?” NOT “What will they think?”
- Keep your Power – Believe that evasive action is brave and intelligent.
Fight
- Choose – Consider what is worth fighting for. Are there other options?
- Timing – Especially if they have a weapon. Pretend to cooperate to get them to put it down. When you choose your moment to respond, do not hold back!
- Connect – Your strong natural weapons to their weak vulnerable areas (especially: eyes, throat, knees and groin).
- Commit 100% – Bend your knees, Yell! Put your whole body behind your strike.
Tell
- Heal – If you have experienced violence, it is helpful to talk about it with someone you trust. It’s never too late to begin talking.
- Break the Silence – Listen to others’ experiences. Share your own. Know you’re not alone in the fight to end violence.
- Share – Share self-defense strategies, information, and success stories with others.
- Be an Ally – Speak up for others when you witness biased speech.

Speak Up for Your Health
Tuesday, June 7
12:00–1:00 p.m.
Led by Grisel Rodriguez-Morales
Virtual via Zoom
Zoom invitations are sent a day or two ahead of the program.
When the average doctor’s appointment lasts just 15 minutes, older adults often struggle to report something other than what’s ailing them. Instead of communicating what actually matters to them in a treatment setting, they can only report on “what’s the matter.” Patient-centered, age-friendly healthcare seeks to change that dynamic. Learn how to take charge of your healthcare communications by understanding how you and your family can “Speak Up for Your Health!”
Grisel Rodriguez-Morales Grisel is Assistant Professor with Rush University College of Health Sciences–Social Work Department. She is Manager of Rush Generations–a free membership health promotion and disease prevention program with over 18,000 members.

Adventure
By Anna Rappaport
I am happy to be back in Chicago, where I now live at The Admiral at the Lake. The Admiral took us on a bus trip to see the temporary spring flower show as well as the conservatory. The exhibits were amazing. I really loved the cactus room and the topical flowers. There was a watercolor class and I was able to sketch one of the sketchers.
