Message from the
Skyline Village Chicago Board
Dear Skyliners,

Skyline Village Chicago was proud to partner with The Kennedy Forum to host a Chicago Community Trust On-The-Table discussion with some of our members about the stigma of mental illness and the elderly.  We were starkly aware that Skyline was the only group that day, when thousands of people around Chicago met to talk about issues, that talked about the impact of mental illness and addictions as we age.  Our board took note and formed a new Public Policy Advocacy Committee that will identify advocacy and education areas where it is important for us, as older adults, to have a seat at the table.

The first project of the PPA Committee will be to follow up on the recommendations from the OTT meeting.  We submitted a two-minute video (see below) to the Trust to help us develop a campaign to educate older adults and their health care providers why it is important for us to not go to a doctor visit alone - a campaign "Don't Visit Your Doctor Alone."  We will work with Northwestern and Rush Medical Centers to develop Informed Advocate Programs.   We will also develop a page on our web site to provide information and active links to places where people can go for help with mental illness and addiction problems and questions.

Other ideas for our advocacy include working with the park district to include older adults and people with disabilities when they redesign our playgrounds and play fields (how about Pickle Ball and adult playground equipment like those found all over Asia, Europe and South America?).  Please join in advocating for these by attending the park district advisory meetings which is included in this newsletter and will be posted on our website.

For more information or to join the PPA Committee, contact Regan Burke    [email protected]

Streeterville Welcomes Me Home
by Jackie Combs Nelson,

Streeterville welcomes me home, after 22 years in the suburbs.
Back to the condo I bought as a single-mom.
In the late 80s, the cherished young son, now 41, had the only bedroom.
My queen-sized bed anchored a corner in our cozy living room.

Streeterville welcomes us home.
Back into the old neighborhood.
Senior citizens now, retired, happily mortgage-free
--travelers who desire turn-key freedom

Jim the janitor, who thinks of my lawyer-son as a curious fifth grader, greets me warmly.
Ryan the doorman, for 23 years, helps us into our building, our home, our 17D.

Streeterville, high-rises built on lake landfill, saddles up to the mighty, muscular John Hancock.
Water Tower, a white, layered shopping mall, another tourist beacon.

By day, the cleaning ladies, doormen, dog sitters, nannies earn their "living wage."

By night, single women and med students--who want safety in dangerous Chicago--return home. Their parents at ease.

By late evening, dogs walk, carriaged-horses clop by, sirens rush folks to help.

Streeterville welcomes me home.
At the end of the block, the great blue lake soothes;
17 floors down, a green city park cheers me.
Twenty-two stories high, our building forms a gentle neighborhood of faces both known and unknown.

Streeterville welcomes me home.

Book Review:
Sex, Lies & Handwriting
by Gail Zugerman

I had the fortunate occasion to meet an author this spring who was the keynote speaker at the April Noah Worcester( honorary dermatology society)banquet in Hawaii that I attended with Charlie this spring.  Dubbed the "Hand Writing Doctor " and the Sherlock Holmes of handwriting, Michelle Dresbold (interesting her initials are MD), is a handwriting analyst who has been helping " put the bad guys away around our country for years."

She is a consultant to private attorneys, police departments, and has the reputation of being one of the top experts in the U.S. on making connections between handwriting and personal identification. Michelle kept us entertained by talking about her time working with the Secret Service, writing a syndicated column for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, and how it all led to her writing her first book called,"Sex, Lies & Handwriting".

Personally, I connected with Michelle at the meeting, and she is not only highly accomplished, but the type of person you would want as a friend. I finally finished her book while stranded on the runway at O'Hare recently, and thoroughly enjoyed her sense of humor, while learning a lot about hand writing analysis.

I sure wish I had met her during my single years. She tells me she has friends who send her signatures for analysis! (READ HER BOOK). The book is a fascinating read that is perfect for a long flight, vacation or staycation. Happy reading!

Lake Shore Park Advisory Council Meetings

Meets Second Monday of the Month
July 11, 5:30pm
August 14, 5:30pm
808 N. Lake Shore Drive

A park advisory council is a voluntary group of individuals who meet on a regular basis to support the effective functioning of their local park. Councils promote ways for the community to better utilize the Chicago Park District's programs and facilities; provide communication to the Chicago Park District on matters relating to their parks.

SVC plans to work with the park district to advocate for older adults and people with disabilities as they redesign our playgrounds and play fields, encouraging them to incorporate things like PickleBall and adult playground equipment as is found all over Asia, Europe and South America. Please consider joining us as we attend park district advisory council meetings.

Attention Dog Owners!

Dear Skyline Members,

SVC members 55+ years of age who own one or more pet dogs are invited to be part of a research study about your relationship to your pet(s). The study involves a survey which will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.  All data is completely confidential. No names are attached to the questionnaires. Easy and fun!

This study is conducted by researchers from the Masters of Gerontology program at Northeastern Illinois University. Your input will help advance the research on the benefits of companion animals on the well-being and the lives of older adults as this population continues to grow.

If you would like to participate please call  Jane Wuellner at 847-917-2231 or email her at [email protected]

A packet will be mailed to you including your questionnaire and full instructions.

Jane Wuellner is a graduate student at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) in the field of gerontology. She completed her internship with North Shore Village. Her thesis will focus on the impact that attachment to a companion animal can have in mitigating social isolation and loneliness in older adults.

Healthy Tip

For better health, STAND UP!

During periods of prolonged sitting, your spine curves as you slouch, putting strain on your spinal cord and preventing your lungs from filling completely. This means less oxygen is distributed throughout your body and brain. To stimulate better circulation and concentration, take a
five-minute walk every hour.

Handy Tip:

Save Lives with the Bee Gees!

Every year, more than 350,000 Americans experience a cardiac arrest outside a hospital - and 70 percent of them happen at home.

Watch this short video and remember the 2 simple steps of Hands-Only CPR.
  • Step one: Call 911
  • Step 2: push hard and fast on the center of the chest as shown in this video. The rhythm of the song Stayin' Alive is 100 beats per minute.
