Dear Skyliners

Spring is in the air as we look forward to March and April. Celebrate the first day of spring at The Walnut Room as members of Skyline Chicago and two other villages and their guests enjoy an informative lecture by Sam Guard regaling us with stories about Marshall Fields and this historic room.  See below for more information or click here to sign up.

Our March Friday Forum will celebrate the birds in the Loop. Watch for more opportunities to connect with old and new friends, including an all-village meeting being planned for May. SVC Friday Forum - January

The ERA is still alive and moving forward in the Illinois Capitol. At SVC's January Friday Forum Senator Heather Steans explained why we need the Equal Rights Amendment now more than ever and why she and Rep. Lou Lang are pushing hard to have Illinois be the state that will push it over the top. For more information visit Senator Steans' website.

SVC Friday Forum - February

Dr. Louise Hawkley started her talk at February's Friday Forum stating that research shows that the risk factor of chronic loneliness is much like smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The Chicago Health and Social Life Survey, a 10 year longitudinal study showed the loneliest people had the highest levels of blood pressure, and young adults are most likely to experience loneliness - "where do I fit, where do I belong?" These feelings spike in the 30's and then reappear in the late 50's and into old age. Women are more likely to admit to being lonely. Lonely people don't sleep less, but tend to wake up tired. Money can open social opportunities, poor health is a risk factor, quality of a marriage matters, having a confident is critical.
What purpose does loneliness serve? We are social animals and need a sense of belonging - "Do I fit?" Feelings of loneliness encourage us to seek others. It is adaptive, and only destructive when it is not acted on. What can we do about it? Louise led a lively conversation. Suggestions included ending each day asking ones self "What is the best thing that happened today?"; joining a Salon; Art Encounter; signing onto the Loneliness Project .

In Great Britain the Prime Minister tasked the under secretary for Sport and Civil Society in the Culture Ministry, to lead a government wide group to establish policies to address the issue; the Office for National Statistics would help to establish a method of measuring loneliness,; and a fund would be set up to help the government and charities to develop a wider strategy to identify opportunities to tackle the problem. Our Villages, CLL, OLLI offer some remedies, but clearly we need to do more.

Speaker Dr. Louise Hawkley

Skyliner Expeditions
Our Skyliner Expeditions editor Judy was a bit preoccupied with becoming bionic so no expeditions this issue. We hope to have more trip stories for the next issue.

How about it Skylne Snowbirds?  Been on any great trips lately? We are eager to hear about it. Where have you traveled? Do you have a story to share? Tell us about it. Where did you go? Did you have a favorite place? Favorite experience? Favorite piece of art? Memorable meal?  Did something surprise you? Best experience?  Or even the worst - because sometimes those make the best stories, don't they?

It doesn't have to be long. Send a photo or three and maybe write a paragraph. If you have a great story to tell, it can be longer. It's your trip, your story and we can't wait to share the adventure.

Our Favorite Things

Poetry Foundation
by Ruth Hoberman

My favorite thing is the Poetry Foundation. The building, which opened in June 2011 at the corner of Dearborn and Superior, is beautiful from the outside as you approach it, and from the inside, looking out.  There are frequent readings and programs there (all free), a small exhibition space (current exhibition, poet/artist Ava Kadishson Schieber), and a library full of poetry books (M-F, 11-4).

Elizabeth Cree
by Mary Houston

One of my favorite things in February was an outstanding performance of a new opera by Kevin Putts, Elizabeth Cree.  It was exciting, mysterious, and entertaining. It was performed by Chicago Opera Theatre at the renovated Studebaker Theatre in the Fine Arts Building. There were only three performances of this opera, but I encourage everyone to check out Chicago Opera Theatre next season for exciting new and interesting productions.

Bionic Judy!
by Judy Karlov

On February 8th  I had Total Knee Replacement Surgery (TKR) in my right knee, and am now officially a bionic woman.  I have learned several favorite and not-so-favorite things from that experience:
  • Choose a surgeon with whom you are totally comfortable. I was lucky enough to choose David S. Stulberg MD, who sees patients in the NorthShore Orthopedic Group, 680 Lake Shore Drive, but remains at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for surgery.  In addition to being a world-class surgeon, Dr. Stulberg is an outstanding communicator.
  • Go to a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation, not directly home. Even if you have a partner who will help you at home, you don't have all the daily physical and occupational therapy you will get at a rehab facility.
  • Choose the facility carefully. I did not choose The Alden Estates of Skokie, which specializes in knee and hip replacement, despite the recommendations of Dr. Stulberg and several friends, and was immediately sorry.
  • Do all the pre-op exercises that you can for a few months before surgery. I not only exercised my quads to death, but also continued my normal daily exercises for the rest of my body.  As a result, my ability to move around and take care of myself for these first few weeks since I got home from rehab has been way above average.
  • Although early healing has gone so well, I anticipate the possibility of depression later on when things move much more slowly toward complete healing. This is common, as Dr. Stulberg thoughtfully warns his patients pre-surgery.  If I feel it happening, I will get outside on sunny days and, if that doesn't help sufficiently, call him to discuss medications.
  • If you are standing by, like the many wonderful friends who have called and visited me, keep in mind the best times.  You wouldn't believe how busy patients are in rehab and even when they first get home!  Mornings are impossible, even for calls.  Evenings are short because the patient gets extremely tired extremely early.  That leaves afternoon as the best time to call and/or visit.
If you have plans to join me in the not-so-elite society of bionic women, please feel free to contact me with any questions.  312-337-7688, [email protected]. The best of luck to you!

2018 Winter Olympics
Joanne Ruxin

The best part of this long, cold, dreary winter for me has been the 2018 Olympics. I never watch sports on TV or anywhere else for that matter. But the Olympics is another story. I stayed up way later than my usual bedtime watching every skating event.

My devotion to the Olympic sport is odd since I have hated ice skating since I was a kid. My mother forced me to go along with my older sister who loved skating and was quite good at it. It was about a mile walk from my home to the ice skating pond. I felt like Hans Brinker with my silver (but mostly white) skates slung over my shoulder. By the time I got to the pond, however, I was frozen and already dreading the long walk home with my bruised and throbbing ankles on which I did most of my skating. My dream as a child on the pond was not to skate in the Olympics, but to never have to ice skate again. But somehow, after my dismal skating experience, I gained a true appreciation of the sport -- especially the pairs skating events. Watching the graceful, fat-challenged skaters made me green with envy until the woman-child was hurled to the ice or dropped from her partner's overhead extended arms.

I bruise easily. I am often covered with the blue/purple/yellow masses on my body. When I slam into some inanimate object, however, I have time to swear, grab the injured body part and slam the door, pound the counter top, or kick the chair or whatever the offending object happened to be. I thought of the poor little skater who had to bounce back up in a nanosecond, still smiling, with no time to assess the damage to her body or glare at her partner. No, she had to pick herself up, dust the ice off herself, and start all over again STILL SMILING. I can't understand why we didn't see the blue and purple bruises on the young women in those skimpy little dresses. Could it be that young bodies don't bruise? Or is it that they weigh so little that they barely touched the ice? But the more important question is why aren't these bruised young things joining the Me Too movement? I guess the Olympic dream trumps any protest.

How to Avoid Being a Victim:
Protecting Yourself from Fraud, Scams and Identity Theft
by Nancie Noie Thompson

An event on fraud, scams, and identity theft targeted to older adults drew a standing-room-only crowd at Fourth Presbyterian Church on February 8, 2018. Sponsored by the Fourth Church Center for Life and Learning (CLL) and Skyline Village Chicago, Berenice Martinez, representing the Illinois Attorney General's Office, addressed a variety of scams and offered advice on how to avoid being a victim .

Telephone Scams
The best way to avoid telephone scams is the easiest: Just Hang-up!   It's important to understand that it is not RUDE, it's SHREWD to hang up the phone when a stranger asks for personal information. If the caller is from a number you don't recognize: Don't Answer the Phone!
S ome warning signs:
  • THEY contact YOU.
  • They want your personal information. Never give personal financial information to someone you do not know.
  • They promise a big award, such as money, an all-expenses paid vacation, an investment scheme.
  • You must pay them first! Never wire money to a stranger.
IRS Scams
Phony IRS scammers are targeting taxpayers more and more frequently. Victims are told they owe money and must pay immediately through a wire transfer or a prepaid debit card. Victims are threatened with arrest, deportation, or suspension of driver's license. If you say no or question the caller, they may become hostile and insulting. IRS Scammers may Know the last four digits of your Social Security Number; or they may call back and pretend to be the police, FBI, or other government agency

Common Scams Targeting Older Adults
  • Grandparents Scam. Callers claim to be attorneys or law enforcement officers saying that a grandchild is in trouble and requesting that money be wired or a debit card be charged.
  • Mortgage/Reverse Mortgage Scam. A con artist offers a free home, investment opportunities, or mortgage or refinancing assistance.
  • Free Trial Offer Scam. Television and Internet ads offer free goods and services, e.g., face creams, and asks for your credit card information. Soon you realize you are being billed every month for that free trail offer.
  • Dating Scams. A scammer may nurture an online relationship, building trust, and then convince you to send money.
  • Computer Tech Support Scam. A caller may send an email offering to help solve your computer problem. One they are given access to your computer they can install malicious software that can capture sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords; request credit card information so they can bill you for phony services, or direct you to fraudulent websites.
  • Bereavement Scam. If you have recently lost a loved one, scammers may call claiming that the deceased person has outstanding debts that must be paid and ask for a blank check or credit card information for payment.
Social Security Number Removal Initiative (SSNRI)
Beginning in April 2018, new Medicare cards will be mailed out to the approximately 60 million beneficiaries. The new card will have a completely different and randomly assigned identified that will be 11 characters long, referred to as the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). The gender and signature lines also will be removed from the card. Medicare benefits will not change; only the number will be changed.
Tips to Help Stop Medical Identify Theft
  • Make sure the SSA has your current address
  • You will never be asked to confirm your new number by phone or email
  • There is no charge for the new cards

Checking Your Credit Scores
Questions were asked about the importance of checking credit scores on a regular basis. Ms. Martinez advised that all three credit score companies be used so that, for example, Experian be used at the following the 1st quarter of the year, Equifax be used after the next quarter, and a score be requested from TransUnion at the end of the last quarter.
  • Register your telephone number with the National Do Not Call Service, even you did this 15 years ago!
  • Limit the cash available on your credit card accounts to from upwards of $10,000 to smaller amounts, $5-$8,0000.
  • Request that political campaigns remove your name from their lists.
  • Request that People Search Sites, e.g., Spokio, remove you from their list.

A Personal Lesson Learned
Having recently emerged from the nightmare of having my bank accounts hacked, I want to say, if this ever happens to you, IT'S IMPORTANT to SHARE your story with others. Our inclination is not to do that because, frankly, it's embarrassing to admit that you have been "tricked." But the bankers and others with whom I met regarding this event emphasized the importance of talking about it.

When I was following instructions from "my hackers" to take a cab up to a certain bank in Evanston, the driver said, "Oh, I know right where that bank is. I had to take another woman, about your age, up there just a few days ago...."

3 Handy Tips from Mari Lipton:

Window Cleaning:
Depending on number of windows in your apt or condo, mix a few drops to a quarter cup of vinegar in water. Use newspaper/newsprint to wipe clean. No smudges or streaks.

Quick and Easy Omelettes:
In a microwavable paper bowl, combine two -three egg whites and one yolk (your preference).  Mix in fresh spinach leaves, cheese, or whatever ingredients you prefer.  Microwave 1:00 - 1.30 minutes. Toss the bowl. No sticky plates; no clean-up.

Ironing/Steaming Tip
Dampen strip of paper towel and place on fabric to be ironed. Works quickly and protects clothing.

Statue Stories
Statue Stories Chicago is a city-wide public arts initiative that brings 30 of Chicago's statues to life. Chicago's most celebrated writers, actors and comedians were commissioned to create monologues for some of the city's famous statues. Pass a talking statue, look for the nearby sign, and use your smartphone to scan the sign's QR Code or type the text in your web browser, and presto-you get a call back from John C. Reilly as Abraham Lincoln, Shonda Rhymes as Miró's Chicago or Steve Carell as a man clutching a giant fish by the Shedd Aquarium. Each has a story to tell. Together they tell Chicago's story.    www.statuestorieschicago.com/

StoryCorps
StoryCorps is pleased to partner with the Chicago Cultural Center and WBEZ 91.5 FM to record, share, and preserve the stories of communities in Chicago.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide people  of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives.
Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have shared stories and life experiences in a StoryCorps recording session. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions listen to our weekly broadcasts on NPR's Morning Edition, local public radio stations and at  www.storycorps.org/chicago

Do you have a story to tell?  Record an interview:
1 . Make a reservation and prepare for your interview on chicago.storycorps.org
2. Bring your interview partner to the StoryBooth. The interview is a chance to ask the questions that matter.
3. At the end of your session, you'll take home a broadcast-quality CD of your interview. With your permission, a copy will be archived at the Library of Congress.

Local stories will air on WBEZ 91.5 FM.

The Chicago Cultural Center offers performances and exhibitions, free and open to the public.
