Josh Engel of Red Hill Birding
March SVC Friday Forum speaker
By Ruth Hoberman

This is the time of year when Josh Engel, founder of Red Hill Birding and a bird-banding volunteer for the Field Museum, puts on a safety harness, creeps out high-rise windows onto ledges, and bands peregrine falcon chicks. The falcon parents, he told a group of Skyline Villagers at the March 24 Friday Forum, respond by diving at his head, which he protects with a bicycle helmet.

Josh was full of fascinating information about Chicago birds. Before the banning of DDT, he told us, peregrines were endangered, but they've rebounded and taken to urban life, finding the skyscrapers much like cliffs in terms of nesting opportunities. Recently, falcons have been seen nesting on buildings on Oak Street, Michigan at the river, Belmont near Sheridan, and Wacker at Adams. Apparently they find flower pots particularly tempting.

For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground while watching birds, there are plenty of places to go: among them, Montrose and Lincoln parks, as well as the lakefront just north of Navy pier. Migrating birds are just beginning to arrive, particularly the red-winged blackbirds, grackles, and robins, who winter nearby in the southeast US. Also arriving are the black-crowned night herons, who nest every year in Lincoln Park. Smaller birds that winter in South America tend to arrive later in the spring.

March and April are a good time to see ducks as well, as they rest up on their way north to breed.   Look for scaup, merganser, golden eye, and redhead ducks at south pond in Lincoln Park and along the lakefront.

Josh answered lots of questions, defending crows and pigeons, and explaining the danger to birds posed by Chicago buildings, particularly those with large expanses of glass. Tens of thousands of birds are killed by collisions with glass walls they fail to see. The Hancock Building has cut down on fatalities by turning off its lights at night, as have other big buildings like McCormick Place. There's also special glass available that is more visible to birds. The new Apple Store on Michigan and the River is working to remedy its bird-collision problem.

For those interested in bird-watching with a group, Josh suggested contacting the Chicago Audubon Society or the Chicago Ornithological Society, and course there's his own Red Hill Birding, which he established in 2016 after leaving the Field Museum, where he worked for many years.

Noises in the City: Sirens, Alarms, Rock Concrts, Sidewalk Musicians and More
April SVC Friday Forum Speaker
by Nancie Noie-Thompson

On Friday, April 27, SVC Members met to listen and learn about the issue of loud noise in our city and the impact it has on many of our lives. The speaker was Kathlyn Maguire, Founder and President of Empowerment Through Hearing and a member of Skyline Village. Ms. Maguire described her personal history, with the discovery of her own serious hearing loss at age 12 and the impact it had on her life as a child and young adult through college and then entering the workforce.

Until recently, she explained, hearing loss was perceived as a disability affecting mainly older adults. But today one in five students has some form of hearing loss; indeed, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) Is epidemic in the 21st century.

Among the loud noises so many of us are familiar with are police, fire truck, and ambulance sirens.   She noted that those sounds in the city of Chicago have been measured at 30 decibels higher than those in New York City. Due to a n oise abatement and control regulation passed in 2005, New York was able to "lower the noise." These alarms can only be turned on and off, but not lowered, she explained. Alarms in most of the U.S. are manufactured by a company in Oak Brook, Illinois.

What can we do to help address the problem? Most smart phones now have apps that measure noise levels. So, for example, if you are dining in a noisy restaurant you can demonstrate to the owner/manager that the sound is dangerously high. Also, your neighborhood and hi-rise building associations need to play a role in bringing more visibility to this issue. She advised using noise-canceling headphones in airplanes and recommends the smaller travel size. Sound machines used in infants' rooms also can cause hearing damage; pediatricians need to be alerted to this danger.

Soon, it will be Summer in the City (REALLY!), which means that we will be coping with noises that will be even louder as we open our windows and balcony doors to the fresh air and balmy breezes. There is a wealth of information on the Empowerment Through Hearing website:     www.hearingconnections.org. More than 40 million Americans have a significant hearing loss; 80% do not seek help, due often to denial, embarrassment, or lack of awareness. Information on the website will help you help yourself, a family member, or a friend.

Speaker Sam Guard:
One of Sam's stories:  Did you know why Marshall Field advertised items in the newspapers for $19.98 instead of $19.99 back in the early days of retailing?  Because the newspapers cost $.02, and with the change, the Field's customer could buy a newspaper, and see more ads, giving $.01 to the news boy and $.01 to the newspaper.

SVC member Bev Frank, speaker Sam Guard from Chicago Hyde Park Village and one of the marvelous wait staff, Anthony.

"I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it what I can.  I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle for me. It is sort of a splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."

Japan
By Phyllis Mitzen

We've always dreamed of going to Japan and when the opportunity arose last Fall, we jumped on it. We only had 10 days, which whittled down to 8 due to the plane delays, a fire on the west coast delaying Michael's flights to Tokyo to meet me, and a typhoon which hit the Island forcing us to leave a day ahead of schedule. However, in those 8 days we did our best to soak in the beauty and culture of this remarkable country.

We took an all day walking tour of Tokyo, taking trains and busses to get around. The famed Tsukiji fish marked lived up to its name as the most vibrant seafood market in the world. There we saw seafood and a wide variety of Japanese ingredients - seaweed, dried bonito flakes, marbled beef and vegetables. The sushi was the best I've ever eaten. We were treated to a tea ceremony and learned the customs of entering and paying respect in the temples. And on that rainy day we saw the five-way crossing at the Shibuya Station - thousands of umbrellas choreographed perfectly as people wove their way across the intersection.

The next day we used the Japan Rail Pass we had purchased before traveling to Japan to take a bullet train to Kyoto where we spent most of the next 6 days. Here's a travel tip. For the princely sum of about $30, we arranged for our hotel to send our luggage on to our hotel in Kyoto - we travelled lightly and it was waiting there when we arrived!

In Kyoto we explored magnificent temples and gardens, including the Fushimi-Ku where we marveled at the endless rows of red columns wending up the mountain. At the Ukyo-Ku we got lost in the bamboo gardens. We also wandered up the Path of Philosophers and saw the Silver Temple and visited Kinkakji (the Golden Temple). After reading Memoirs of a Geisha, I insisted that we go to the Geisha district where we saw many (or were they Chinese tourists who had rented kimonos for the day?) and had a delightful dinner.

We also took a day trip to Hiroshima where we visited the bridge that was the visual target for our American bombers and the Peace Museum with clock that counted the days since the first atomic bomb was dropped (26,373 on the day we were there), and days since the last nuclear test (47 on the day we were there). Most moving was the Children's Peace Monument with the statue of Sadako Sasaki at the top and surrounded on the plaza by thousands of colorful origami cranes brought there by school children from all over Japan.

On our final day, in drenching rain, we met Ayaka Kasuga, a graduate student working with a friend of mine here in Chicago.   She is studying wisdom and aging and is a Buddhism expert. We visited 5 temples and then went to an amazing restaurant where we were served a dozen small plates, each beautifully prepared. I also finally dined on Okonomiyaki at lunch - it is not to be missed if you go to Japan!!

The country and its people have a grace and beauty that is both compelling and inviting. We were sad that our trip was cut short and hope to get back there again soon.

Favorite experience? Favorite piece of art? Memorable meal?  Did something surprise you? Best experience?  Or even the worst - because sometimes those make the best stories, don't they?

It doesn't have to be long. Send a photo or three and maybe write a paragraph. If you have a great story to tell, it can be longer. It's your trip, your story and we can't wait to share the adventure.

Saturday Division Street Farmer's Market opens May 12th
By Marcia Slater Johnston

A delicious treat on a balmy late spring, summer and early autumn Saturday morning is a stroll over to the Farmer's Market on Division Street between Clark and State.  There you'll find dozens of varieties of plants and blooming flowers, fresh-picked lettuces, tomatoes, cukes, beans, summer squash, beets, broccoli and peppers -- as well as juicy, perfectly ripe strawberries, blueberries, melons and peaches. You'll also find friendly, helpful vendors who'll suggest how to best store and keep your produce -- and sometimes dispense tasty cooking and baking tips.

Take a detour down East Bellevue and stoke up for your shopping spree by sampling the pancakes and omelets at the Luxbar, Tavern on Rush, or Pancake House sidewalk cafes.

The Farmer's Market is open from 7 AM until 1 PM.  Be sure to take a couple of shopping bags with you to carry all your healthy goodies home.

  Sketches from Anna Rappoport

Last winter I enjoyed the outdoors in central Florida. Gatorland has a breeding area when there are many nesting birds.  Some of the nests are very near the boardwalk and you can get a very nice view of nests, eggs, babies, etc. I understand that there are more than 100 pair of nesting egrets in the area as well as a number of other birds. I went there several times to draw this winter.

821 North Michigan Ave.

Our friends in the Young Ensemble are performing The Fox Sisters, written and directed by Lindsey Noel Whiting.

In the mid-1800's, the religious movement known as Spiritualism began in the most unlikely of places: the bedroom of two young girls. Under the influence of their sister Leah, Maggie and Kate Fox experienced fame, fortune, and international acclaim. But all good things must come to an end...
SEE the sisters' humble beginning and the dizzying heights to which they ascend!
HEAR sounds, voices, and music from another world!
WITNESS for yourself the story of America's most famous mediums!

Statue Stories
Statue Stories Chicago is a city-wide public arts initiative that brings 30 of Chicago's statues to life. Chicago's most celebrated writers, actors and comedians were commissioned to create monologues for some of the city's famous statues. Pass a talking statue, look for the nearby sign, and use your smartphone to scan the sign's QR Code or type the text in your web browser, and presto-you get a call back from John C. Reilly as Abraham Lincoln, Shonda Rhymes as Miró's Chicago or Steve Carell as a man clutching a giant fish by the Shedd Aquarium. Each has a story to tell. Together they tell Chicago's story.    www.statuestorieschicago.com/

StoryCorps
StoryCorps is pleased to partner with the Chicago Cultural Center and WBEZ 91.5 FM to record, share, and preserve the stories of communities in Chicago.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide people  of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives.
Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have shared stories and life experiences in a StoryCorps recording session. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions listen to our weekly broadcasts on NPR's Morning Edition, local public radio stations and at  www.storycorps.org/chicago

Do you have a story to tell?  Record an interview:
1 . Make a reservation and prepare for your interview on chicago.storycorps.org
2. Bring your interview partner to the StoryBooth. The interview is a chance to ask the questions that matter.
3. At the end of your session, you'll take home a broadcast-quality CD of your interview. With your permission, a copy will be archived at the Library of Congress.

Local stories will air on WBEZ 91.5 FM.

The Chicago Cultural Center offers performances and exhibitions, free and open to the public.

Tuesday Mornings at Replogle
Sacred Pause
7:45-8:15 a.m.
Stone Chapel

Free and open to all

In the midst of your busy life, take a few minutes on Tuesday mornings to find some stillness and experience silence. Take a break from the relentless pace and stress of daily life.

You don't have to be an experienced meditator to attend, and you're free to use the silence of our Sacred Pause in any way you like. We have resources to help you practice if you need help--poetry, readings, inspirational photography--but the format is simple and open: a greeting, a candle, a bell, twenty minutes of silence.
