You can receive your COVID-19 vaccine simultaneously with your flu vaccine. To learn more about the current vaccines, visit the CDC's COVID-19 webpage.

Schedule an appointment for your updated vaccine at:

Order your free COVID-19 tests at the end of September.

Insights on Aging

Women Growing Older

Prominent feminists such as Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan have tackled the issue of aging as a feminist issue. More recently, popular shows such as Grace & Frankie have taken a humorous look at this issue. But what are the implications of this for the everyday lives of women as they grow older? How can a gender lens help to illuminate the challenges of aging? How do societal expectations of women “of a certain age” affect one’s perceptions of self? This program will explore how aging and gender intersect.

CART captioning will be provided. For more information, contact counselingservices@cje.net or 773.508.1088. While professionals are welcome to attend, CEUs are not provided.

This Chair Rocks by Ashton Applewhite. What is the most rewarding thing about getting older? Do you feel as people age, they become happier? Are you familiar with the aging myths, and in what ways can we all rise above ageism? Appleton argues that ageism is a prejudice that generalizes the experiences of older adults as lonely, disgusting, and unpleasant. She debunks the myths and stereotypes around getting older in a youth-obsessed culture. Appleton states we should be creating a world of “age equality” by making the discrimination of age unacceptable.

What's Cookin'

Bill St John’s website is loaded with recipes, food histories, answers to questions, and how to shop for your supper at the farmer’s market. Bill has worked in the kitchen on the Orient-Express, interviewed the nuns who cooked for the Pope, traveled round-trip overnight to Burgundy to interview Georges Duboeuf on Beaujolais, lived at the Abbey of Orval to watch its monks make beer, and offered his shoulder as a resting place for a napping Julia Child during boring meetings.

Since 1983, when he started as a writer and teacher, Bill has contributed to publications worldwide, including the Rocky Mountain News, Denver Post, and Chicago Tribune. His work in Wine & Spirits magazine earned him a nomination in 2001 for a James Beard Journalism Award. His writing, recipes, and reflections are in the archives of over 100 U.S. and overseas newspapers and magazines.

A natural teacher, Bill has taught at the university level. But he has also shared, at schools of his own devising, his vast knowledge of wine, food, cooking, travel, and the history of cuisines. So far, Bill has visited 44 countries, 42 of the U.S. states, and 10 Canadian provinces. While that wide travel gives his writing authority, his great warmth and humor make his work a “must-read.”

Past Events

Official. August 2024 had the highest temperatures ever recorded for Chicago. Does anyone doubt this is a consequence of Climate Change? We may be discouraged by the slow-moving government and industry changes to protect the environment. However, there is still much we can do to slow climate change—one area to reduce greenhouse gases that cause climate change is composting food scraps.

Erlene Howard, President of The Collective Resource Compost Co-op, spoke to Skyliners at our monthly lunch in August about how your highrise condo or apartment building can compost.

Sign up here to find out about how to get your building involved!

When food scraps are buried in landfills, they cause harm in the form of methane, a greenhouse gas. It’s estimated that a head of lettuce would take 25 years to completely break down in a landfill, emitting methane all that time, and be so contaminated with other non-organic waste that the resources in it could not be recovered. —Erlene Howard

Thomas McAfee, President of Northwestern Medicine and Ann Hall Vice President of Administration at NM speaking to Skyliners at lunch. McAfee explained how the health system, the hospital, doctor's offices and the emergency department are still reeling from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. He committed to an ongoing relationship with Skyline Village Chicago through periodic focus groups with Ann Hall. If you'd like to be a part of this effort, contact us at svcchgo@gmail.com.
