AHAI ASSOCIATION LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Since revamp four years ago, attendance has increased each year
By Greg Bates, Special to AHAI

Whatever the organization, it's a smart one that constantly looks at what it is doing and if it's doing enough to benefit members.

Four years ago, AHAI transitioned from its ordinary annual meeting and spiced it up a little bit. AHAI changed the name of its yearly gathering to the Association Leadership Conference, each word emphasizing part of an effort to get members more involved in the association as well as help the individual clubs grow.

"Our annual meeting before this was really generic and it was just the board members sitting up front giving some report, doing some business," AHAI President John Dunne said. "We figured that it wasn't a great opportunity. It was an opportunity missed and so as we've matured in this process getting into the leadership portion of it, it was putting a committee together this year to start it right when we finished last year. When we did a recap of last year's [meeting], this committee got together and they thought it would be a good idea to rebrand it. FULL ARTICLE>>

WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT TOPICS INTEREST YOU
Over the past seven years the "A Step aHead" program has been focused on educating the Illinois Youth Hockey community about concussion awareness and treatment. The four organizations that make up "A Step aHead", the Chicago Blackhawks, AHAI, Athletico, and NorthShore University HealthSystem, will be offering a free seminar this year on a broader range of health and safety topics, as well as other issues important to youth hockey. We would very much like to know about the specific needs of players, coaches, parents and others involved in youth hockey. Please complete this very brief survey so we can tailor the educational seminar to these needs. Additional information, including date, location and presenters will be announced when available.

ASK AHAI: NON-SANCTIONED TOURNAMENTS
QUESTION: My oldest boy is now playing Bantam and his team participated in the Chi-Town Shuffle last weekend.  A couple of boys on the team suffered concussions, which happens, but there were checks, cross checks, and hits to the head that weren't called. I realize that's always going to be the case in some form or fashion; however, if the officials don't know what is an illegal hit or aren't confident enough to call such, what will stop the same thing from happening repeatedly? I recognize that the officials are doing their best and I'm not attempting to be critical of them or the players that commit the infraction but possibly more education is needed so that we can start to diminish these incidents.  Last year we had four boys on our team break bones. We need to find a way to minimize these injuries. The game is physical, but there must be a way to minimize concussions and other serious injuries. Does "Ask AHAI" have any thoughts or ideas on my concerns, I'd welcome the feedback. ANSWER>>
