The Piecemeal Approach to Affording Higher Education

Week 3: Scholarships

Our first email introduced the piecemeal approach to paying for college. Last week we talked about summer earnings as one of those “pieces” and shared tips to make saving easier. This week’s key piece? Scholarships.

Many outside organizations and businesses award scholarships, so you’ll have to actively research and apply for them.

Summer is the perfect time to search for scholarships! To get started, visit our Maine Scholarship Search page and:

  • Download our scholarship tracking spreadsheet (.xlsx format or Google Sheets).
  • Start looking for scholarships using our Maine Scholarship Search tool.
  • Check out the additional scholarship sites and organizations listed on the page.

Want some helpful strategies for your scholarship search? Check out our short video on Scholarship Success! In this video you learn more about where to find scholarships, how to get organized and manage your applications, and tips to make your application stand out.

NEXT WEEK: We’ll add a third “piece” to your funding pie—financial aid. We’ll help you learn about financial aid so you’ll be ready to apply in the fall.
