March 2021
Sleep Awareness Week: March 14-20
Trying to get through your day from another sleepless night! We’ve all been there. But what is it exactly that’s keeping you up at night?

For veterans, in addition to the stress of the pandemic, there are any number of factors that could be contributing to insomnia including traumas associated with deployment, years of irregular work hours and difficulties surrounding the transition into civilian life.

But now a growing number of post-9/11 veterans and military family members are learning how to trade in tossing and turning for deep sleep with the help of The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Veterans Village of San Diego. That’s because our Cohen Clinic offers sleep specific therapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) that has been shown to improve sleep in 75 to 80% of individuals with insomnia. See the webinar below on insomnia, presented by our Psychiatrist Dr. Mark Shideler.

Podcast Appearances
At the Cohen Clinic at VVSD, it is important for us to be a part of the conversation when it comes to mental health and resources in our community. We recently participated in important conversations with military and community-related podcast shows that helped us bring awareness about our services.
To celebrate the month of love, Holding Down the Fort hosted a special episode with two staff members from the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics in San Diego, CA and Virginia Beach, VA. Military Spouse and Outreach Manager at the Cohen Clinic at The Up Center Heather Wilson, and Military Spouse and Outreach Coordinator at the Cohen Clinic at VVSD Jenny Lynne Stroup joined to share lessons that every couple can learn from to help strengthen their relationships.

Cohen Clinic at VVSD Clinic Director Shari Finney Houser sat down with Supervisor Jim Desmond to talk about how the pandemic has affected the mental health of veterans and military families throughout the state of California, including San Diego and the Oceanside area.

In an effort to share information about the services at the Cohen Clinic at VVSD, Clinic Director Shari Finney Houser and Outreach Cooridnator Jenny Lynne Stroup sat down with Derrick Evens, host of Smarter San Diego, to talk about how we are helping veterans and military families make it back to better.
