Message from the Board

Despite brutal weather, the PTO has had a very productive 2014. We provided (Valentine's Day goodies), fundraised (Bake Sale, Family Zumba Night, Sarris Candies and Gongaware & Parry Easter Flowers, Box Tops Contest), supported (Mrs. Hartman's Art Show and Kid Kouncil's Hero's Lunch), launched (our new news-based Facebook page), and rallied (Spirit Sales!). But one of the most rewarding things that we have done in the new year is cooperated

Working closely with Mrs. Burns and the Librarians, the PTO celebrated reading with two amazing assemblies that literally ROCKED the LGI with laughter and cheers. Local hero and world record holding open water swimmer Darren Miller shared his inspiring life motto "Every breath is a gift" with the 4th and 5th grade students, imparting a message of perseverance and charity. Outback Ray delighted kindergarten through 3rd grade students with a surprising hands-on demonstration of amazing animals. Both assemblies served to inspire our children with the kind of adventures and discoveries that can be found in the non-fiction books that the Wild About Reading Contest encouraged them to read. We know our kids came home on Library day with books about animals, and likely, many of yours did too. This is what so much of our fundraising and volunteering is about - exciting the kids and enhancing their learning. We should all be very proud!

Photos of both assemblies and details about upcoming events can be found on For up-to-the-minute PTO news, join Sloan PTO Press on Facebook and look for some fun FB challenges, coming soon!

Until next month...

Family Zumba Night!

Thanks to those who got their wiggle on at Family Zumba Night on Friday, January 31st. A REALLY fun, energetic, hip-shaking time was had by all, and another $120 was raised for the PTO.  Look for more information about a return visit by Christina from Alba Fitness in the near future.

Seussical Scarf Day -

Monday, March 3

As a kick-off to Read Across America Week at Sloan, Mrs. Fierle encourages students to wear a Seussical scarf throughout the school day; a scarf that is bright, colorful, patterned, or otherwise SEUSSICAL. Brightly colored shirts, especially Dr. Seuss shirts, are also encouraged.

You're never too old, too wacky, too wild,
To pick up a book and read with a child.
You're never too busy, too cool, or too hot,
To pick up a book and share what you've got.

In schools and communities,
Let's gather around,
Let's pick up a book,
Let's pass it around.

There are kids all around you,
Kids who will need
Someone to hug,
Someone to read.

Come join us March 3rd
Your own special way
And make this America's
Read to Kids Day.
