Message from the Board 


Getting JAZZED! 

The school year is well underway, and we are feeling the excitement already...


Our Book Fair, Clothing Sales, Student Directory, Kidstuff Books, and Bake Sale Committees did a bang-up job of giving our families what they want while raising funds for all of the cool stuff we have planned this year...things like the Josh & Gab anti-bullying assembly that ROCKED the school this past week and the spooktacular Family Movie Night coming up October 25.


On another high note, we've noticed many new names popping up in our volunteer pool, on our Facebook Community page, and on our E-News distribution list - encouraging signs that our goal of pulling the Sloan community even closer together is on the right track.


For more information about this community, the Welcome Packet that began distribution this week contains lots of great information about our committees, upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, Corporate Contribution Programs, and our annual Fund Drive. Any place you can personally chip in is much appreciated by the Board, your fellow parents, and most importantly, the kids! PTO Meeting Summary


The first General Membership Meeting of the year was held on September 10 at 6:30 p.m. The new Executive Board was introduced, after which upcoming events and needs were reviewed and motions to approve the 2013-2014 Budget and revised PTO Bylaws were made and accepted.  Additionally, Nancy Golembiewsi was unanimously elected to fill the Treasurer vacancy. Principal Burns discussed the new security measures in place this year, which was followed by a presentation and question and answer session by featured guest speaker Superintendent Dr. Piraino.  For a full summary of the meeting, please click here to read the Minutes.



Clearances Workshop    


 If you are interested in obtaining your clearances and fingerprinting to volunteer at Franklin Regional for chaperoning field trips, going to Deer Valley with your fifth grader, being a homeroom parent, attending classroom parties, assisting in the computer lab or library, providing clerical support, helping in a classroom, or any other regular volunteering, the Heritage PTO is holding another Clearances Workshop on Wednesday, October 2 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The workshop will take place in the Heritage Computer Lab in the lower level of Heritage (on the same floor as the cafeteria). We will have online access to forms, stamps, envelopes, cashiers' checks, and a mobile provider who will do the fingerprinting. You will need the following items: a credit card; your social security number; driver's license or passport (photo ID); addresses of where you lived since 1975 (partial or complete); and $10 in cash. The cost is $10 for PA Criminal Clearance (credit card), $10 for Child Abuse Clearance ($10 cash - cashier's check will be provided), and if you need the fingerprints, $28.75 (credit card). Spirit Sales 2013

Thanks to all the volunteers who came to help with the first spirit sales of the school year - Jennifer Taylor, Pam Rowell, Deb Rhea, Marlo Ayres, Laura Pasqualini, Amie and Jeff Fricke, and Jenn Majors. The children thoroughly enjoy the experience of shopping for spirit gear on their own. They look forward to the sales three times yearly. See you in January! Go Panthers!


Book Fair   



With the many successes that resulted from the Book Fair, the most important is our shared effort to encourage and inspire life-long readers who may look at books as treasures. Our Sloan families have supported this goal again by purchasing books for their own libraries as well as the classroom libraries of our beloved teachers by choosing a teacher-selected book from the wish list pyramid. These generous contributions resulted in $120 for our All for Books campaign, which put new titles into our Sloan library and classrooms, and $11,492.61 in total sales, earning our school 25% of that total in cash, which is used for the PTO's outstanding programs for our Sloan students!

Without our dedicated, talented, and generous volunteers, our Book Fair only would have been a desert mirage; instead, it was the completely rewarding Reading Oasis it was meant to be: a cool place to discover hot books, and extraordinary people who gave their time and energy to support our students and our school. THANK YOU!   


Like the great pyramids of Ancient Egypt, the success of the Sloan Book Fair relies on a solid foundation. Luckily, we have that in our wonderful, students, faculty, parents and volunteers! While students visited our reading oasis, they were treated to informative book reviews delivered by the fabulous Mrs. Perrot, Mrs. Zeigler, Mrs. Fierle and found that our Book Fair truly was a cool place to discover hot books!

Bake Sale   


A huge "Thank You" to everyone that donated baked goods along with all the wonderful patrons that made donations at Open House. A grand total of $856.00 was made for both nights. We are grateful to all the amazing families at Sloan that helped make our first bake sale a success!!

Wear a Hat for Cancer       


I would personally like to extend my appreciation to all the students, staff & families at Sloan Elementary for their participation in "Wear a Hat for Cancer" Day. It was a huge success and thanks to all that participated, we raised a grand total of $1,140.35 that will help benefit children being treated for cancer. All the funds raised will go directly to the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh UPMC.   The students and staff at Sloan got to wear their favorite hats, while helping out children. Thank you again for all the donations and to all those that help make this day so successful! We have an awesome community at Sloan!

Josh and Gab Assembly  


 The JOSH & GAB Show was the first assembly of the school year. On Thursday, September 26th, the PTO brought an interactive musical-comedy bullying awareness program to school. The Josh & Gab Show put a wonderful spin on the message that bullying is NOT okay.   The program included music, stories & audience participation about overcoming bullies. All students from Kindergarten through 5th grade enjoyed the program. The Josh & Gab Show was fantastic & the student participation was amazing!

Market Day 


Market Day

Thanks to all that ordered last month!

Market Day made a profit of $300.14 this month and had 39 customers. October paper orders are due to the school no later than Tuesday, October 15th. Internet order deadline is Thursday, October 17th by midnight. Deals for October include free Broccoli Florets for all orders over $40, and free ChickNsteakes for all orders over $90. Original Works promotion 


Sloan is pleased to announce that from October 1, 2013 - October 28, 2013, we will again be running the Original Works Artwork Program.


In business since 1989, Original Works is the #1 art based fundraising company in the country, and currently works with thousands of schools and hundreds of thousands of students each year.


Through the Original Works program, each child will have the opportunity to have their very own artwork or a photo reproduced onto a variety of high quality products. Each child is eligible to participate in this wonderful program. Once the artwork is created, parents and children will have the opportunity to select which product or products they would like to feature their artwork. All orders will be delivered to Sloan Elementary School by November 27, 2013; Just in time before Thanksgiving break and for you to mail your Original Works Artwork presents to those out of town relatives and friends!


Kidstuff Book reminder


 Use just a few coupons from the KidStuff Books and you could save more than the $25.00 cost of the book!  The KidStuff Book fund raiser ends this Friday October 4th.  If you have not already done so, either return a payment of $25.00 for the book that was sent home with your child, or please return the book to the school.

Family Movie Night

Excess for Recess 


games Excess for Recess is back again this year! Organize your old and outgrown items and help our teachers replenish their closets and shelves with items for students to play with during inside recess. We are in need of your gently used board games, puzzles, books, Legos, blocks and building toys, computer games, flash cards, and card games. On November 8th, we will set up a "store" where the teachers will "purchase" items for the classrooms with vouchers given to them by the PTO. Donations can be dropped off at school, or you can contact Laura Pasqualini (412-886-0419/ or Pam Zimmerman (724-327-5410/ to make other arrangements.  Help Sloan earn credits to purchase school equipment just by shopping at Giant Eagle or Get Go Stores.   Register your Giant Eagle Advantage Card by calling 1-800-742-7753 or by registering online at

Click on the Savings tab, and select Supporting Our Schools. Our school ID is 988. Last year we earned enough points that Mrs. Stewart was able to select an iPad for the students to use. Please encourage family and friends to register under our ID also.

Inkjet/Toner and Electronics Recycling Program 



 Donate your used laser and inkjet printer cartridges, cell phones, computers, and cameras and earn new technology, recreational equipment, and/or cash for Sloan. We accept all brands, including generic items. Please send your items to school with your student for drop off in the cardboard recycling box in the entry. GFS Fun Funds Program




To support Sloan PTO, go to, and sign up for a Fun Funds Card. Our ID number is 2305956. You can also sign up at the Customer Service Center inside any GFS store (The closest is in Monroeville, behind Kohl's). Don't forget to mention Sloan PTO! You will receive a Fun Funds Card to use every time you shop, earning the school cash quarterly.

 We are now accepting new applicants for the Fun Funds Program through GFS Marketplace Stores.

Talent Show



 Calling all dancers, singers, acrobats, cheerleaders, comics, and generally just talented kids! This January, we will be giving you the chance to strut your stuff in front of your friends and family. Details coming soon, but start thinking about how you can OWN the stage at a Sloan PTO Talent Show!

 We are very pleased to announce that Sloan PTO will be selling Vocelli Food Cards again this school year! These convenient $10.00 cards include two BOGO pizza coupons, two BOGO gourmet subs coupons, and two BOGO breadsticks coupons. The cards are good for pickup orders only, at the Golden Mile Highway location. For each card you purchase, you'll be entered to win a Vocelli gift certificate for a free pizza! This 100% profit-making fundraiser is year-long.
