Slow Down

Slow down.

Pay attention.

Do good work.

Love your neighbors.

Love your place.

Stay in your place.

Settle for less, enjoy it more.

Call Advent Devotion Writers & Artists

This year we are centering our Advent Devotion on the Jesse Tree Symbols and Bible Stories. A Jesse Tree is a way of preparing for Advent by journeying through the stories on Jesus’s family tree. Each day of Advent, there will be a Bible story about someone in Jesus’s family and an ornament symbolizing their story. The tree will show us how, through many generations, God prepared for Jesus to be born.

We need both devotion writers and artists to sign up for each day in advent. Devotions should be about 300 words. Art of all kinds is welcome and can be newly or previously created. We just need a photo of the art to be included in the devotion book. Kids of all ages are encouraged to sign up as well! Visit our Advent page for details and to sign up. Contact Katie@scapc.org with any questions.

Toiletries Requested for Raintree

This month, Presbyterian Women are collecting donations of bath towels, washcloths, full-size shampoo and conditioner, lotion, soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes for the participants of Raintree Children and Family Services. Raintree brings hope, happiness, and healing to those in foster care, a group home, or those who have developmental delays or disabilities. Donations can be placed in the basket by the Chapel entrance.

PINTS Classic Tennis Tournament

It’s time for the 3rd Annual PINTS Classic Tennis Tournament! Join us for this adults-only event at the City Park Tennis Courts this Saturday, October 18 from 4-6 p.m. The suggested donation is $10 per player. We’ll have drinks and light snacks and head to Blue Oak to celebrate afterwards! RSVP at scapc.org/tennis or on the SCAPC app. Questions? Email caitlin@scapc.org.

40/50's Saints Watch Party

Join us for the 40/50's Saints Watch Party! We'll meet this Sunday, October 19, at Urban South (1645 Tchoupitoulas St.) for the Saints vs. Bears game which kicks off at noon.

Challenger Class Retreat for 4th & 5th Graders

The Challenger Class annual retreat will take place October 24-26 at Tickfaw State Park and is open to all 4th and 5th graders, regardless of church affiliation. Our theme this year is “Why Follow Jesus?”. We will leave from the church Friday at 5:00 p.m. and return Sunday morning. The cost is $120. Register at scapc.org/challenger-retreat or on the SCAPC app.

Scottish Heritage Sunday

Tartans! Bagpipes! Kilts! During worship on Sunday, October 26, we will incorporate worship elements from our denomination’s very beginnings, enjoy a rousing bagpiper procession, and recognize SCAPC’s 50+ year members. Selley Series speaker Rev. Dr. William H. Willimon of Cambridge University will preach at both services and lead an adult Sunday School class at 9:30 in Frampton Fellowship Hall. A reception will take place following the 10:30 service in the Land Building with Scottish treats to enjoy.

We encourage everyone to wear tartan!

England/Scotland Pilgrimage

Would you be interested in a travel pilgrimage in October of 2026? The pilgrimage, led by Chris Currie and Jim Wallace of Scotus Tours, would take place from London to Canterbury to the Holy City (Edinburgh), focusing on England’s cathedrals and Scotland’s Abbeys, sacred sites, and communities. Visits would include Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, York Cathedral, Durham Cathedral, the Holy Isle of Lindisfarne, Melrose Abbey, Dryburgh Abbey, Galashiels-Great Tapestry of Scotland, Edinburgh, and St. Giles. Please contact pierce@scapc.org if you would like to be listed as a ‘person of interest.’ If 24 or more participants express interest, we will share a more detailed itinerary.

Volunteer Opportunities for Professionals

Be Well-Come Together (BWCT) is a local New Worshipping Community of the Presbyterian Church (USA) that is based at Faith Presbyterian Church in Harvey.  The mission of BWCT is to support the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of residents in Harvey, LA and the surrounding area. Since Harvey is a community where the poverty rate is 42% higher than the national average, BWCT provides all its programs free-of-charge to community residents. BWCT is seeking the assistance of volunteers who have skills in health care, mental health, finance/accounting, and exercise. For details, click here.

40/50's Tailgate

Last week the 40/50's group enjoyed a Tulane Football tailgate party at the home of Paige and Chep Morrison, followed by the game against East Carolina where they cheered the Green Wave on to victory!

Sunday School Adult Classes

First and Second Samuel | Sept. 7 - Nov. 23 | Phifer Library

During the reigns of Saul and David as recorded in First and Second Samuel, the people of Israel experience fear, disappointment, heartache, and betrayal. The compelling theme that weaves its way through these two books and into our lives is the need to balance both the gift of life from God and the promise of God’s steadfast love with the ever-present human temptation to take control and usurp God’s authority.

Lessons from the Lectionary | Sept. 7 - Nov. 23 | 2nd floor conference room | led by Caitlin Wallace-Rowland

Join us as we deep-dive into the lectionary scriptures of the day’s service. This discussion-based class will use commentaries and other resources to guide us as we learn about the week’s text—reading it together, discussing what we think it means, how we can connect it to our lives, and what we think God is calling us to do. Together we will add greater depth to our understanding of the scripture behind each week’s sermon.
