What’s Happening
The Jefferson Avenue bicycle lanes / two-way cycle track between 5 Street and 11 Street are substantially complete and open for use.
Just before the new year, the city installed temporary delineators required to safely open the new bicycle / micro-mobility path. These temporary delineators will be in place for approximately two months until the permanent K71 bollards are delivered and installed, as per Historic Preservation Board (HPB) order.
Pursuant to recent state regulations, the Art Deco inspired artistic asphalt designs were removed from the project. In lieu of the asphalt art, the curb extensions will be painted Miami Beach Red to enhance pedestrian visibility and improve overall safety.
Please note that temporary bicycle lane closures may occur intermittently during daytime work hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to facilitate painting the curb extensions.
Project completion is anticipated in Spring 2026.
Project Benefits
Residents of Miami Beach and the Flamingo Park neighborhood can expect to see more walkable streets, designated bicycle lanes/ micro-mobility facilities, and calmer traffic with less speeding. The goal of this project is to improve mobility for everyone living and visiting the area, increase pedestrian safety and to make our streets safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable.
Some history: the concept of Slow Streets was introduced to Miami Beach in 2020 (during COVID) as a tool to transform residential streets with low traffic volumes into alternate mobility boulevards to increase pedestrian and bicycle activity. Slow Streets are successfully used in other cities throughout the United States with applications of various forms of traffic calming.
