From Data to Downtown: Industry Technology, Community and Opportunity

Innovation, Local Investment, and What Comes Next

Small credit unions are finding ways to strengthen their organizations and communities. In this issue, we look at two examples: preparing for AI and emerging technology, and how a small member credit union helps support revitalization in its community.

We explore how credit unions can build the data, governance and strategy to use AI effectively and responsibly. That same focus on thoughtful, forward-looking action is reflected in the work of Athol Credit Union and the Polus Center for Social & Economic Development, whose Remaking Main Group is supporting downtown revitalization through small business development, public art and workforce training. Together, these stories show how small credit unions are turning ideas into meaningful action.

Want to hear how your peers are approaching AI, community initiatives, or the Impact Grant? Join us at APEX on Wednesday, October 14 for a dedicated Small Credit Union Networking Session. There’s no formal agenda, just time to connect, exchange ideas and discuss the challenges and opportunities you're navigating. Small credit unions also receive 25% off registration for CCUA events, including APEX.

The AI Readiness Question: How Credit Unions and Banks Can Use It, Not Just Have It

AI is already embedded across the tools we use nearly every day, making responsible governance just as important as adoption. Credit unions should clearly define accountability, monitor activity and understand how vendors use data and manage limitations. Strong oversight also means asking for transparency around model performance, limitations and data while ensuring people maintain real authority over critical decisions.

From Vision to Action: Athol CU Impact Grant

Athol Credit Union and the Polus Center for Social & Economic Development used support from the CCUA’s Impact Grant to advance community revitalization through the Remaking Main Group. The initiative combines small business development, public art and workforce training to create new opportunities and strengthen the local economy. From bringing new energy downtown through Community Canvas to helping local entrepreneurs grow, the work is creating visible momentum. A developing Clean Energy Training Program will also connect residents with skills for emerging careers. Together, these efforts are helping build a stronger future for Athol and the North Quabbin region.

“The CCUA Impact Grant has helped Athol Credit Union turn our vision into action, supporting transformative initiatives that strengthen our community and create new opportunities for the Athol and North Quabbin region.” — Athol Credit Union
