Katana's Corner: Monthly Reflections from Katana Abbott | | The Courage to Begin Again | | |
“Even when life does not go according to plan, there is always a path forward. Our work is to envision what is possible, ask for help, take the next right step, and trust that we are being guided toward something greater.”
—Katana Abbott
After speaking with this month’s guests, Karin Kusano and Amy Peterson, I found myself thinking about what it really means to begin again.
Both women have experienced times when life did not unfold as expected. Each had to reassess, change direction, and create opportunity from circumstances she never would have chosen.
Amy Peterson saw beauty and possibility in pieces of fallen Detroit graffiti that others might have overlooked. Through Rebel Nell, those broken pieces became beautiful jewelry—and a pathway to employment, confidence, and independence for women facing significant barriers.
Karin Kusano also transformed adversity into opportunity. Through determination, education, and the courage to reclaim her financial power, she created a new future for herself and began helping other women do the same.
Their journeys are different, but I believe they share something important: neither woman allowed her circumstances to have the final word.
| | Five Unexpected Gifts of Starting Over After 50 | |
By Joanne Klein, SWT Guest
At 65, I found myself staring at a life I no longer recognized. My marriage had ended, and with it my role in my husband’s business. The future stretched out before me like an empty canvas, and I was terrified. Never once did I imagine that an exciting new chapter was still waiting to be written.
Faced with starting over, retirement wasn’t an option. Work gave me purpose and needed income. But it had been 18 years since I left my job as a college dean to raise my daughter and join my husband’s business. I felt irrelevant and old.

Reclaiming the Pieces, Building Beautiful Futures
with
Amy Peterson
Founder & CEO of Rebel Nell
| |
What becomes possible when we look beyond someone’s circumstances and recognize their potential?
Amy Peterson saw beauty in pieces of fallen Detroit graffiti. She also saw the strength and talent of women living in a nearby shelter who faced significant barriers to employment. Those two observations inspired Rebel Nell, a social enterprise that transforms reclaimed materials into one-of-a-kind jewelry while helping women build confidence, financial independence, and a more secure future.
What began as an idea rooted in Detroit has become a nationally recognized business built around creativity, opportunity, and community impact.
Join Amy and Katana as they discuss:
- Finding opportunity in unexpected places
- Why our circumstances do not define our potential
- Building a business where purpose, creativity, and profit work together
- What can happen when women are given the opportunity to thrive
Amy’s story is a powerful reminder that difficult circumstances are only one part of a person’s story—and that recognizing someone’s potential can help change what comes next.

Starting Over, Taking Financial Control
with
Karin Kusano
Cryptomarket Strategist
| |
What happens when the financial security you counted on suddenly disappears?
Karin Kusano, known as “Crytomommi,” describes her former life as that of an “unbanked middle-class American housewife”—comfortable on paper, but without financial knowledge, credit, or independent access to financial accounts.
As a single mother of four, Karin began teaching herself about money and the markets from her kitchen table.
That decision led to a career in digital assets, financial advocacy, policy conversations, recognition at a NASDAQ bell ceremony, and now law school.
This is not a lesson in cryptocurrency. It is a conversation about starting over, taking control, and building a future on your own terms.
Join Karin and Katana as they discuss:
- Why every woman needs authority in her financial life
- Learning about money and investing at any age
- Rebuilding confidence after financial upheaval
- Rediscovering yourself through reinvention
Karin’s journey is proof that it is never too late to learn, reclaim your power, and change direction.
