The Missing Piece of Retirement Planning: Why Building Wealth is Only Half the Story

“The key to a successful retirement is retiring to something, not from something.”

I've been helping people plan for retirement for nearly four decades.

In fact, I became a financial advisor just six months before Black Monday on October 19, 1987—the day the stock market experienced the largest one-day percentage drop in history.

Since then, I've helped clients navigate the technology bubble, the Great Recession of 2008, the market volatility of 2020, and the unusual stock and bond market correction of 2022.

Each time, the headlines were different.

Growing Wealth is Important. Protecting it Matters Too.

By Sweta Singh, SWT Guest

When most people think about investing, they think about growth.

They think about stocks, market gains, and building wealth for the future.

But there is another side of investing that often gets overlooked—protection.

As women move through midlife and into retirement, many begin asking different questions:

"How do I protect what I've worked so hard to build?"

Why Social Security is Critical for Women

By Mary Beth Franklin, CFP®, SWT Guest

For most retirees, Social Security is a critical piece of the retirement income puzzle. It provides guaranteed income for life, no matter how long you live. And it is inflation-protected, increasing through annual cost-of-living adjustments in most years to keep up with inflation and preserve buying power. But Social Security was never designed to be the sole source of retirement income. To have a comfortable retirement, individuals need to have other sources of income such as a pension, retirement savings or other investments, home equity or even a part-time job.
