SELF-CARE: IT'S MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU THINK

B y Dr. Keesha Ewers, SWE Contributing Expert

In my medical practice I am diagnosing more and more women with autoimmune illnesses. Women are diagnosed with autoimmune diseases 10 times more than men are. There are several reasons for this, but I have noticed that much of it has to do with the fact that women spend more time caring for others than they do themselves.

Research tells us that people who take time to regenerate their batteries are healthier, more creative, happier, and enjoy more abundance in all areas of life.

SELF-CARE BEGINS
IN THE PRESENT
 By Katana Abbott, SWE Founder

I spent two weeks at a spiritual retreat overlooking the ocean in Brazil several years ago. I was the only American surrounded by others from every part of the world, including Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.

The idea of taking off two weeks was unimaginable to me, but to the others, it was simply normal. In fact, many were heading off to spend another couple of weeks touring different parts of South America.

Are you in the present?
PUT YOURSELF AT THE TOP OF THE LIST

' You owe yourself the love that you so freely give to others."

When I was raising my daughters and working full time ten years ago, I did not make time for myself; and it cost me my health. In fact, I was so busy working long hours, leading events, driving kids to after-school activities, and caring for elderly parents, that I had forgotten to make time for myself. I thought I was superwoman, and it took a toll on me!

Find out what Katana did to put herself at top of that list!

THREE SNEAKY CAUSES OF WEIGHT GAIN
(AND LOSS)

By Dr. Keesha Ewers, SWE Contributing Expert

When I was 30 years old, just before being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, I blew up with 10 extra pounds of “puffiness” that I could not explain. Along with the puffiness came extreme joint pain, nausea, and esophageal reflux (heartburn). I couldn’t seem to get comfortable because of digestive distress. Nighttime was the worst, and I tossed, turned, got up, took TUMS, tried to eat before bedtime, tried to fast before bedtime, nothing seemed to work. At one point, I went into urgent care, because I was having such bad chest pain, I was sure I was having a heart attack.

'BECOMING ASTRID' EXPLORES HOW WE BECOME WHO WE ARE

By Brent Marchant, SWE Contributing Expert

As we grow up, we lay the foundations for our lives and for who we end up becoming. Some of us may feel that this results from a series of happenstance events, random occurrences that seemingly materialize with no rhyme nor reason. Yet, if we look closely enough, there’s a certain order to things, with elements that unfold from identifiable aspects of our upbringing, many of which, in hindsight, often appear purposeful, as if they arise from defined, deliberate underlying influences and initiatives. Thus, when we examine our lives from that perspective, it’s quite possible to clearly see how we become who we are. Such is the case with the film chronicle of the formative years of a beloved children’s author, Becoming Astrid ( Unga Astrid ), available on DVD and video on demand.
