AUGUST 24, 2025

Last week, JFS welcomed over 150 Stamford students to our fourth annual back-to-school event — a joyful and empowering day designed to ensure that every child can start the school year with the confidence and the supplies needed to succeed.

Thanks to the generosity of caring community members, students were able to personally select their school supplies, turning what could be a stressful experience into one of dignity, choice, and excitement. From backpacks to notebooks, every item was donated with love — and we are deeply grateful.

We also extend heartfelt thanks to our incredible volunteers from ICON International, King School, individual volunteers who generously gave their time and support, and Brunswick School, whose students not only helped out but also played soccer with the children — adding fun and energy. We are especially grateful to the community providers who participated in the event, offering valuable resources and support to families. We appreciate the kindness and welcome of St. Basil Seminary for hosting us on their beautiful campus. A special thanks to Joan Popper, whose thoughtful planning and coordination helped ensure the event was a success.

“The goal of this event is to reduce inequities and ensure that all Stamford Public School students have access to the tools they need to start the year off right,” explained Rachel Kornfeld, JFS CEO.

And of course, no celebration is complete without a sweet treat — children enjoyed ice cream from Mister Softee.

Margaret has been volunteering with JFS since March 2025, bringing kindness, reliability, and a great sense of humor to her weekly visits with Elizabeth through our Supermarketing for Seniors program.

“I’ve always enjoyed giving back to my community,” Margaret shares. “Volunteering has been part of my life since I was a teenager, and I’ve encouraged my kids to do the same.”

Each week, Margaret and Elizabeth connect by phone to plan a grocery run. On shopping day, they chat in Elizabeth’s kitchen, review the list, and catch up. Margaret not only shops but also helps with small tasks like taking out the trash or bringing in the mail — turning errands into moments of connection.

One of Margaret’s favorite memories? “Elizabeth gave me detailed instructions for a butcher request and said, ‘Being charming and smiling always helps.’ I followed her advice — and it worked!”

But the most meaningful moment came when Elizabeth told her, “I don’t just consider you a volunteer. I consider you my friend.”

Margaret encourages others to get involved: “JFS has so many ways to volunteer. Supermarketing for Seniors is a wonderful way to connect with older adults and make a real difference.”

"We’re so grateful for the incredible GCDS Summer Program. Our son Andri loved every moment — from the fun activities to the warm, welcoming atmosphere created by Yina and the amazing team. He came home each day smiling and full of stories. The thoughtful gifts, especially the photo book, were a beautiful surprise and will be a cherished keepsake. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who made this summer so special!"

School starts next week—and JFS needs volunteer drivers!

Help deliver meals and snacks to local schools this summer and throughout the school year. Volunteer drivers pick up and distribute food, helping ensure that every child has access to nutritious meals. Your time can make a real difference in our community! If interested, email Melissa Basile-Reolon to help!
