Smilezone Grand Openings

We are proud to celebrate two exciting milestones in our mission to transform hospital experiences for children and families. We recently installed two new Smilezones—one at Janeway Children’s Hospital, marking our 500th Smilezone nationwide, and another at The Moncton Hospital. These vibrant, therapeutic spaces are designed to bring comfort, joy, and a sense of normalcy to kids during challenging times. Each new Smilezone represents our ongoing commitment to creating uplifting environments where children can feel supported, confident, and, most importantly, smile.

500th Smilezone at Janeway Children’s Hospital - St John's, NL

The Smilezone Foundation is proud to unveil six vibrant new Smilezone spaces for the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre’s Occupational Therapy department.

This unveiling marks a remarkable milestone: the creation of the 500th Smilezone across Canada, celebrating 11 years of transforming healthcare spaces for young patients nationwide.

Thanks to the generous support of the Allan and Darlene Dillabough family, six areas of the department, including treatment rooms and the department’s gym, have been beautifully reimagined.

“Together with my wife, Darlene and our family, I am so proud to give back to our community here in St. John’s through the Smilezone project at Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre,” said donor Allan Dillabough. “This hospital means so much to families across Newfoundland and Labrador, and we hope that these new Smilezones will bring lots of joy, comfort, and smiles to the kids who come here for treatment.”

The Moncton Hospital, Moncton, NB

The five new Smilezones at The Moncton Hospital include redesigned treatment and therapy areas that promote healing through bright colours, engaging murals, and interactive features, all crafted to help children and families feel at ease in a healthcare setting.

“Supporting the creation of these new Smilezones aligns with our commitment to enhancing patient care and improving the hospital experience for families in our community,” said Tracy Clinch, Chair, Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation. “These spaces bring warmth, comfort, and hope to young people during some of their most vulnerable moments, and we are incredibly proud to help make that possible.”

“At Assumption Life, we believe deeply in investing in the well-being of families and strengthening the communities we serve,” said Sébastien Dupuis, President and CEO, Assumption Life. “Supporting the Smilezone transformations at The Moncton Hospital is a meaningful way for us to help create brighter, more uplifting environments where children can feel safe, supported, and empowered on their healing journey.”

World Smile Week

World Smile Week was a wonderful celebration of joy, connection, and community as Smilezone partnered with organizations across Ontario to bring uplifting activities to children, families, and healthcare teams. From animal encounters to creative workshops and community events, each visit helped spread positivity and showcased the power of a simple smile.

Hands on Exotics – Humber River Hospital

We kicked off the week by joining Humber River Hospital for their first “Peas in a Pod: A NICU Celebration.” The event honoured families whose children began their journey in the NICU, and Smilezone was thrilled to partner with Hands on Exotics to bring along a Savannah cat, a parrot, chinchillas, guinea pigs, a tortoise, a rabbit, and a bearded dragon. Families were invited to meet and hold the animals, filling the day with excitement, laughter, and heartfelt moments—a warm and uplifting start to the week.

Cookie Decorating – EveryMind Centre

The Smilezone team spent an engaging afternoon at the EveryMind Mental Health Centre in Mississauga, where children and youth participated in a colourful cookie-decorating activity. Kids designed cookies inspired by dinosaurs, outer space, and all things bright and fun.

Hands on Exotics – Hamilton Child and Family Supports

Our next stop brought us to Hamilton Child and Family Supports for another exciting Hands-on Exotics event. Families had the opportunity to meet a parrot, hedgehog, guinea pig, ferret, rabbit, bearded dragon, and snake. Children were especially thrilled to touch and learn about each animal, and staff joined in the fun as well. The visit filled the centre with energy and big smiles, creating memorable moments for everyone involved.

Corporate Canine – St. Michael’s Hospital

On World Smile Day itself, Smilezone visited St. Michael’s Hospital for a heartwarming session of Canine Therapy. Therapy dogs Jacoby Pippin (Beagle) and Pluto (Maltipoo) greeted patients, staff, and families. Their calm presence and friendly demeanour brought comfort and joy, reminding everyone how meaningful small positive interactions can be in a healthcare setting.

Heroes Walk and Roll – Lansdowne Children’s Centre

To close out the week, Smilezone joined Lansdowne Children’s Centre for their annual Heroes Walk and Roll event at Brantford Park. Families and supporters dressed as superheroes and participated in games, activities, and a community walk celebrating inclusion, courage, and community spirit. The event was filled with colour, excitement, and togetherness—an inspiring end to an amazing week of smiles.

Tim Hortons Holiday Smile Cookie 2025

From November 17th–23rd, Tim Hortons restaurants across Sault Ste. Marie sold Holiday Smile Cookies in support of the new Smilezone coming to Sault Area Hospital in 2026. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity, enthusiasm, and community spirit shown throughout the week.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped bring the campaign to life—from the dedicated hospital staff to the Soo Greyhounds, Kiss 100.5, and all the amazing community members who came out to decorate cookies and purchase Smile Cookies.

Your support helps bring us one step closer to creating an uplifting, child-friendly space for kids and families at Sault Area Hospital. We can’t wait to share the Smilezone transformation with you in 2026!
