AGTA Joins Forces with Rapaport

Colored Gemstones now Listed on RapNet

In a bold move by the American Gem Trade Association—one that we anticipated at last year’s Tucson Elevated Seminar Series featuring Martin Rapaport—the AGTA is taking the lead in helping its members promote and sell colored gemstones online on what is reportedly the world’s largest gem trading platform, RapNet. The timing of this initiative could not be more important, as demand for colored gemstones is at an unprecedented high.

During the opening seminar session at this year's AGTA Gem Fair Tucson, we listened to John Ford, CEO of AGTA, and Saville Stern, Chief Operating Officer of RapNet, discuss the new partnership. "We're looking to increase our members' ability to have market access around the world," said Ford. He went on to say, "Participating in this endeavor establishes that AGTA's code of ethics, principles of fair business practice, and our disclosure requirements are the standard for RapNet, as RapNet is going to be the standard for the world. That means, no matter where you are in the world, if you're going to trade on RapNet, you are going to follow our code of ethics and our disclosure requirements. And that makes AGTA the world standard."

What is Going On In Malawi?

Malawi Places Temporary Ban on All Mineral Exports

Malawi Suspends ALL Mining Licenses

Gemstone Industry Under Investigation

First, Malawi’s government places a 21-day temporary ban on the export of all minerals - including gemstones - to allow the country’s Ministry of Mining "to streamline procedures."

The Daily Times reports that the ministry "wants to enhance regulatory frameworks that benefit both the industry and the country’s economic growth."

Then the following day, Malawi’s government suspends all Mining Licenses, claiming undervalued gems are at issue.

According to the latest Malawi News, Vice-President Michael Usi "has ordered the immediate suspension of all mining licenses in Malawi and demanded a thorough review of existing contracts amid concerns over undervalued gemstone exports that are costing the government millions in lost revenue."

Tucson wasn't all about fine gemstones, although the AGTA GemFair, GJX Tent, the Pueblo Show, as well as the 22nd street tents had plenty of fine gems to shop. Above, the annual hunt for a nice piece of Fordite was successful. Found at the Pueblo Show, Chasin' Gems, Carmine Allocca, Geology, Volcanology, Gemology. This one is complete with metal flake!

Another affordable find in Tucson, a doubly terminated rock crystal quartz with central interrupted growth, from Pakistan. A bit roughed up from its travels from the mine to Tucson, we gave it a PhotoShop face-lift in honor of our friend and gem photographer Tino Hammid, Jan. 6, 1952 - Jul. 11, 2015, who would later use PhotoShop to create gem photo art.

The Tucson Effect - "There's SO Much, we can keep looking ... " There was a time when you couldn’t walk through the Tucson gem shows without seeing piles of blue topaz! It was everywhere. And after days of roaming the shows, you’d start feeling overwhelmed by how much blue topaz was available—and yet somehow, there was never much to be found back home in the jewelry store.

These days, blue topaz has taken a backseat to Ethiopian opal. Everywhere we looked, there were piles and piles (and even more piles) of beautiful rough and polished Ethiopian opal. After seeing so much of it, we started to wonder—will any of it sell?

Do you have any back home in the shop? Not much? Hmm... Maybe you should have bought some when you had your chance.
