Snakes, Locusts, and Repentance
A message from Mtr. Rita Kendagor, Assistant Rector
| |
What if you were called a low-down dirty snake by a preacher? Would that person have your undivided attention, at least for a few minutes? Well, as we will read in our Gospel on Sunday in the third chapter of Matthew, that’s kind of what happened to some of those who were listening to John the Baptizer speak. Of course, he had more to offer but let us suffice it to say that, at the point of being called a bunch of snakes, the ears of his listeners had perked up.
You may be thinking, “but what does this have to do with Advent? After all, tomorrow is the 2nd Sunday of Advent.” And right you are. You see, our society has taken this season as a time to focus on the glitz, glamor, and feel-good vibes of Christmas. And there is nothing wrong with that. But this reading in our Gospel about John’s message forces us to see that Advent – or the time of waiting for Christ – is also a time of reconsidering our ways, hence, it is a time of repentance.
This season of Advent here at St. Andrew's has a lot to offer. I encourage you to pick up an Advent schedule that is available in the Narthex. There you will learn more about the Advent book study which takes place between services for the next three Sundays, as well as other Advent offerings which will assist you in finding hope and meaning during this season of waiting. And for many among us, the holidays are a time of remembering the pain of losing a loved one. The first session of the series, Grief During the Holidays, took place this past Thursday, but there are two remaining sessions. This series is happening at 6:00 PM on Thursdays at HJs.
But this Sunday, we will delve into some of what John the Baptizer had to say. We may even take a few minutes to learn about some scrumptious ways to prepare roasted locusts and honey. You’re not going to want to miss this.

Experience Advent with New Eyes
You’re invited to participate in a four-part discussion during – and about – Advent. Join us to see this holy season with new eyes!
Together, and guided by Amy-Jill Levine’s book, Light of the World, we’ll make some interesting Advent connections: inter-generational connections, past-present-future connections, mundane and holy, Hebrew Bible people and Advent people, the Bethlehem “manger” and the Last Super. We’ll reminisce, find humor and sorrow, learn more about the “supporting cast,” and clear up some misunderstandings.
We’ll meet between the two Sunday services, November 30 to December 21, from 9:15 to 10:00. The (short, four-chapter) book will be provided to participants. If you’d like to join in or have questions, contact Susan Paynter.

Trailside Thursday: Living with Grief During the Holidays

The “Living with Grief during the Holidays” series will meet at HJs for three Thursday nights, beginning in December.
Dates: December 4th, 11th, & 18th, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM.
This series will be led by Chaplain Janette Platter, Spiritual Care Director at Bishop Spencer’s Place.

Stewardship Season: Let Blessings Flow
Thanks to all who have shared your pledges of estimated giving and other acts of devotion for 2026! And thank you to each writer who shared reflections for our stewardship-season devotional guide about giving and receiving. As Fr. John said in his letter to the parish a few weeks ago, spiritual growth begins with opening ourselves to receive—and the more we receive, the more we’re empowered to give. Our life together at St. Andrew’s helps us grow in both: through prayer, worship, learning, fellowship, service, and generosity.
As we look toward 2026, we invite every household to offer a pledge. Any level of commitment is an important step in saying “yes” to God’s blessings flowing through your life.
Make your pledge by contacting the office or visiting standrewkc.org/stewardship-pledge-form.
